"SEASONS"- TOO SHORT,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Shortened Seasons: The Untimely Deaths of Major League Baseball's Stars and Journeymen (Paperback)
While I greatly enjoyed "SHORTENED SEASONS", I read it at one sitting.
Though some of the players' ends (such as Munson, Clemente and Chapman etc.) have already been extensively reported on, I found the inclusion of those on the other side of the scale (such as the one-gamers) novel and entertaining. Other than realizing the picture on page # 152 of Elmer Gedeon had to be that of Elmer's uncle, the banned-for-life, Joe Gedeon (in either 1913 or 1914, before Elmer was born) my only problem with the book was: I wish there were more of it. An excellent book about a truly different subject - baseball players that died before their careers were over. Many of the players featured are strangers to us. But just as many are, or were, household names. This is not a book about death. It's a book about the lives of these baseball players who had a personal side which were learn about. I recommend it highly.

Most of the names in this book, you probably have never heard of. But that is what makes it interesting. Some of the what-if careers and the endless possibilities of what may have been.
I am certain there are more careers out there that Fran did not touch on, but it is a nice retrospective. Would like to see Nick Adenhart (Angels) and maybe other overlooked players in a future updated version. Check this one out. |
