Book Description

March 1994
The question and answer format of this book tells people new to shortwave listening everything they need to know to tune in to broadcasts around the world. After a short history of how shortwave radio began, the text describes the variety of programmes available on the shortwave bands, tells readers how to choose a radio that will best meet their listening needs and explains how to write reception reports and collect QSL cards, pennants, post cards and other souvenirs from the stations they hear. Readers will also learn about shortwave signal "skip", how to tune in ham and utility stations and where to obtain the latest station frequencies and broadcast times.

Review

Operating a shortwave radio is a way to gain access to worldwide news straight from the source, or the latest in music before it makes it to this country. This book gives you quick basics for becoming a shortwave listener including sources for books and equipment. Shortwave radios are broadcast at a particular frequency which allow their signals to travel great distances and unlike a ham radio operator, you don't need a broadcasting license to listen. Most international programs are broadcast in English. Also, AMARC Women's Network Resource Directory has a worldwide listing of women's radio shows. With a powerful enough receiver, you could tune in. Maybe you'd even like to take it a step further, get a license and become an operator so you can broadcast your own message-definite possibilities. -- From The WomanSource Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community for Women; review by Ilene Rosoff

Q. Are shortwave radios expensive?
A. They certainly don't have to be! Although you can spend hundreds, even thousands, of dollars on shortwave equipment, it is possible to get shortwave listening for under $100. In the past few years, several manufacturers have introduced low-priced pocket portables that can give you a taste of international shortwave listening for around $30.00 to $50.00.
