I can listen to Shorty for a long time, November 24, 2011
This review is from: Shorty Rogers: The Sweetheart of Sigmund Freud (2 CD SET) (Audio CD)
I've been a big band aficionado for a number of years now and I'm always on the lookout for exciting big band jazz, whether brand new like Roy Hargrove, Maria Schneider, or Gordon Goodwin, or something from a bygone era that I missed in my jazz journey. The Sweetheart of Sigmund Freud, a selection on the Penguin Jazz Recordings core collection falls into the latter category (obviously). Shorty Rogers was a decent trumpet player who was much in demand as an arranger throughout his career. He worked closely with big names such as Art Pepper, Shelly Manne, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, and Stan Kenton. Not surprisingly then, he played with a lot of different groups, ranging in size from trios up to big bands. Though strictly speaking not all of these works are big band efforts, many of the smaller groups at least qualify as "large ensembles". But whatever the definition, the sound on every song is "large". This two CD set is especially satisfying because it covers a number of years, a number of different bands (I counted nine, and that doesn't count different iterations of the same bands), and of course, contains a lot of different songs. Most are upbeat and seriously swinging. Some are off beat, with cutesy scatting ("boop boo-dee oo-bop") or rapid Latin rhythms. All are interesting and highly listenable. The recordings are crisp and clear, but if I were to have any complaint, it would be that sometimes the balance is off between sections, but that is a minor quibble at best. I'd have to say that Rogers' trumpet section is one of the hottest I've ever heard, and he writes most effectively for Maynard Ferguson, harnessing that blistering and accurate squeal of his to give his trumpet section a dynamic edge that few other trumpet sections (with the possible exception of when Dizzy Gillespie was leading a big band) have ever achieved. Others that will especially love this collection are anybody who has an affinity for West Coast jazz a la Stan Kenton and the sounds he inspired, or anybody who just wants a swinging good time, big sound, and hot jazz, which are not all in short supply (sorry) on this phenomenal 2-CD set.
