This review is from: Shostakovich: Complete Songs, Vol. 4 (Audio CD)
I think Shostakovich is the greatest Russian song composer. Yes, better even than Mussorgsky. On the disc are several songs from movies that he scored. The highlight is his anti-formalist rayok which is a scathing satire of know-nothing party bureaucrats who were constantly interfering in Shostakovich's creative work. The libretto is hilarious.
I would recommend this as a great introduction to Shostakovich's songs. There's so much more to him than his symphonies, string quartets, and Lady Macbeth. After hearing this you might want to listen to his songs from Jewish folk poetry which I think are his finest songs. |
