Biography

John Cale was born in Wales but moved to London and then New York to study music. He joined The Velvet Underground in 1965 and played a key part in the distinctive sound and experimental ethos of their first two albums. In particular, he introduced the droning violas that made songs such as "Venus In Furs" so groundbreaking. After White Light/White Heat, Cale left the band, due to musical… Read more in Amazon's John Cale Store

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best soundtrack, February 15, 1999

I've got this cd, and I listen to it all the time. It has a lot of Factory period songs, some of which are originals, some are re done by newer artists. One song is composed by John Cale, who was in the Velvet Underground. But my favorite is Sunshine Superman by Jewel, and Demons by Yo La Tengo, the band who plays the Velvet Underground in the movie. It's a song I could listen to over and over because it has such a strange feel to it. And there is also a dialogue clip of Valerie Solanas' SCUM Manifesto near the end. I also like Mas Que Nada alot too. This is the most eclectic thing I've ever heard, and it makes you think Andy would have loved this cd if he ever heard it. Definitely recommended. If you are even considering buying this in the least bit, I would urge you to take a chance on it. I'm glad I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorite albums, October 5, 2000

I can't remember why I originally bought this album, but I think it was for the first two tracks. I had assumed that this soundtrack would contain few songs that are actually listenable, as is the case with many soundtracks. I was SO wrong. This is one of the best CDs I own, and I listen to it almost obsessively. One of my favorite tracks is Ben Lee's version of "Itchycoo Park." There is something so honest and nonchalant in his approach of this song. I also really enjoy Jewel's "Sunshine Superman." The track twangs with seductiveness. This is one album you can actually listen all the way through!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great movie - very good soundtrack that could've been better, September 10, 2008

This review is from: I Shot Andy Warhol: Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
This is a good soundtrack from the outstanding mid-90's film. However, there were several great songs in the film that somehow didn't make it onto this album: Dionne Warwick's "Walk on By", Love's "The Red Telephone", and Blue Cheer's "Summertime Blues." I would gladly trade the tepid R.E.M. and Jewel covers for a couple of those gems, though in reality, there would have been plenty of room for all of these songs on the CD. I also have to wonder why there were no Velvet Underground songs in the movie or on the soundtrack (perhaps a permission issue?), though the band at the factory party is clearly supposed to be the Velvets.

Reservations aside, the second half of this CD is dynamite (from "Mais Que Nada" on). The Love song that did make the cut, "Gimi a Little Break" is new to me, and it's a sweet shot of sonic mayhem from Arthur Lee and company. My two favorite tracks are "Sensitive Euro Man" by Pavement (one of my favorite bands, I confess) and Bettie Serveert's superb cover of Dylan's "I'll Keep It With Mine." I have long been a huge fan of Fairport Convention's majestic version of this song, and after hearing this version (which runs over the film's closing credits), I immediately went hunting for this soundtrack (which, by the way, comes pretty cheap these days). It's just as successful as FC's cover, though completely different. A sweet song by Yo La Tengo and excerpts from John Cale's fine score round out this very good compilation.

P.S. See the movie - Lily Taylor is outstanding.
