5.0 out of 5 stars Shot in the Dark, October 6, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Shot in the Dark (Audio CD)
This is by far one of GW's best in my book. I've been a fan of GW since 1984, when the Black album came out and have been a fan ever since. I was totally amazed when Shot in the Dark came out. I was in the music store the day it was released and played the tape so much it skreeched. With songs like Shot in the Dark and Face the Day, it shows where the roots of Once Bitten, Twice Shy, Hooked and Psyco City stem from. If your a serious GW fan, you have to have this cd in you collection. With all this said you have to include the ballads Waiting for love and Runaway. Slower songs yes but what an edge they display. One of the 80's best recordings if you ask me. GET IT !

5.0 out of 5 stars A phenomenal early release, July 2, 2006
This review is from: Shot in the Dark (Audio CD)
This CD is as mature and complete an album a young band can produce. The songs range from mellow to outright ballsy, and i agree that "Shot in the Dark" should be on the Greatest Hits collections. It truly is a great tune!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good album, worth a listen!, April 30, 2000

This album is hard to describe. It has half of the hard edged rock of their first self titled album, but also the bluesy feel that came with the rest of Great White's CDs. Some of these songs are keyboard driven, which I hate, but luckily when the guitar comes in, it overpowers the annoyingly-toned keyboard. Slower songs on this album are Is Anybody There, Run Away, and Waiting For Love. All of these are good songs especially Run Away. The harder songs are She Shakes Me, Face The Day, Gimme Some Lovin' and Shot In The Dark. What Do You Do is a below average attempt at a pop song, the only bad song on the album. The record only has 8 tracks on it, which takes away from the presentation. The all out best songs on this album are Face The Day and Shot In The Dark. The image is awesome for a hair band. Jack Russell is holding a gun on the back of the case, yeah baby! I really recommend this album, just be careful if you don't like keyboards, or you may not think too highly of this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still rocks but not as their debut album !, June 4, 2001

The best tracks on this album ( Run Away, Shot in the Dark & Is anybody there) are placed at the end which I find strange. Nevertheless this second effort from Great White is less impressive than their debut album but it's still rocks the way GW always does.

This album sounds a lot like Fastway " Trick or Treat - Soundtrack". It's too bad that both titles have gone out of print .

4.0 out of 5 stars Killer second album, April 2, 2010
This review is from: Shot in the Dark (Audio CD)
Originally released in 1986, Shot in the Dark was the second album from California hard rockers Great White. With their appreciation for the blues and emphasis on music over appearance, Great White was one of the better bands to emerge from the Hollywood hair metal scene.

Shot in the Dark isn't as bluesy as later Great White albums, but it's still one of the band's best works. It's just a great, hard-hitting rock album that showcased the best elements of the Hollywood rock sound before all the spandex and hairspray. There are some great rock anthems here (like "She Shakes Me" and the title track) and an above average ballad ("Is There Anybody There"), plus a pair of interesting covers - "Face the Day" by the Angels and the Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin'." The Spencer Davis cover is pretty awful, but "Face the Day" sounds like it was written just for Great White, and they continue to play it live.

It's a shame this album is so hard to find compared to Once Bitten... and ...Twice Shy, both of which are still on store shelves, because it's one of Great White's best albums. If you're a Great White fan, you can't miss Shot in the Dark.

Edition Notes: Shot in the Dark was reissued by Razor & Tie in 1996. It's a straight reissue - no remastering or bonus material. It was reissued again in 2005, this time by EMI in Japan. The EMI reissue has been remastered. Hopefully at least a European reissue is forthcoming, because if it's anything like the EMI Whitesnake and MSG reissues, I bet it sounds amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise, April 24, 2009

I have several Great White cd's, but I never bought this one from their early days. I remember hearing "Face The Day", but I never got around to finding what cd it was on. So now that I just bought it, I found out that, not only do they have more good songs like "Face The Day" on the cd, I don't even thing that is the best one. I think "Shot in the Dark" (from the title of their album) is even better. This song blew me away. It's awesome! This song should be just as popular as Ozzy's same title song "Shot in the Dark". Of course they are two very different songs. The cd also starts off with a really good song "Shake It", which you won't be able to shake the music out of your mind. My 5 yr. old son, kept singing it after he heard it. Anyway, if you like albums like, Once Bitten, Twice Shy, Hooked, and Psycho City, you will love this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Album info, February 2, 2009
This review is from: Shot in the Dark (Audio CD)
More info than review. I feel that others praise the album well enough. I have loved this album for a long time and was disappointed by the original Capitol issue. I don't own this edition, but I do own the original LP issued by Greenworld/Telegraph. The album was picked up by Capitol shortly after and for years that was the only available CD. Consequently the songs were affected by the label jump. Enjoy the disc in its initial release!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Oldie, but a goodie., February 12, 2008

Been waiting for this on CD for many years!!! I only had it on cassette before. Great to listen to it again. Some of their best work, if you like their earlier music with a harder edge. The sound is a little different than the tape--possible it is from it being digitally remastered.
