Book Description

May 1, 2004
Over 1300 brilliant color photos and 1000 line drawings display whiskey shot glasses from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, both domestic and foreign. Many styles and materials are included that advertised whiskies and drinking establishments from elegant to common taste. Collecting them is fun and entertaining, for they represent many diverse places, periods, and social preferences. The text provides a useful history of shot glasses, a general guide to pricing, and an overview of the marketplace. Values for the glasses displayed accompany the captions. In addition, tables list thousands more, each described, dated, and valued. This book will be a valuable addition to the libraries of glass collectors and whiskey lovers alike.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful Volume For The Collector, July 27, 2004
This review is from: Shot Glasses (Hardcover)
This is Pickvet's fourth book on shotglasses. It is the first hardcover book in the group and the first to include color photographs of the glasses. There is a limited amount of text, with about half of the book containing pages of images, and the other half being filled with descriptions and values for the approximately 5,000 glasses that Pickvet has identified to date.

Unfortunately many of the problems from the last book are also present in this volume. Although the use of photographs makes identifying certain glasses easier, the photographs make it more difficult for other glasses. The images of glasses with wraparound designs, or with designs on the back, are often difficult to make out because the design from the back of the glass merges with the design from the front.

The descriptions are again separated from the images, making it difficult to read a description while looking at the corresponding image. The descriptions, while useful, are often incomplete and frequently contain abbreviations that can be confusing, especially for glasses where there is no image available.

Although the book is not perfect, it is still a great reference for collectors of all types. For people who have his previous books, this book contains new and updated information. For people who do not have his previous books, the database covers all of the glasses from the older books, so you do not have to go out and find the older out-of-print volumes. (A die-hard collector may still want to get them for the additional images)

This book may also appeal to a type of collector who were not interested in his previous books -- those who collect pre-prohibition sample glasses. While Pickvet's previous books had few sample glasses listed, there are about 20 pages of sample glasses in this volume.
