4.0 out of 5 stars An book of unique WWII-era airplane photos, March 12, 2004
By

This review is from: Shot to Hell: Stories and the Photos of Ravaged WWII Warbirds (Paperback)
Most of the photos in this fascinating collection have never before been published, they are well reproduced, and the captions are crisp and infomative. Plus I could not find one error of fact. People who read this sort of material know that in itself is an achievement! Although this is mostly a picture book, the accompanying text flows smoothly and provides a good sense of the times. By the way, the photo at the top of page 106 is particularly interesting. It illustrates an upside-down Stearman with a unique non-standard landing gear that looks for all the world like a Cessna spring steel gear. The picture was shot at Wright Field, a major testing facility, so maybe this was an experiment that went bad.

I am pleased to add this book to my library and look forward to other titles by Cory

5.0 out of 5 stars Damaged Goods, December 2, 2007
This review is from: Shot to Hell: Stories and the Photos of Ravaged WWII Warbirds (Paperback)
This is a somewhat depressing photo journal of damaged or destroyed warbirds of WW II. Depressing in that, during any conflict, damage is bound to be incurred. This book is full of photos that you would hope to see in such a volume. Bomber crews huddling around a large hole in the tail of their B-24, crash landings after hydraulic failures, belly-up P-51's, and a poor A-20 that looked as if it were imitating a beached wale in Canada. Most of the photos in this volume you will not see in other publications. Of the 125 pages there are photos on every one, and while some are slightly grainy, most are beautiful and full of small details. This is a great book for aviation enthusiasts, anyone in the aerospace industry, or individuals thinking of perusing a career in aircraft accident investigations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent but incomplete, July 24, 2006

This review is from: Shot to Hell: Stories and the Photos of Ravaged WWII Warbirds (Paperback)
An excellent collection photographs covering a wide range of aircraft types with very good accompanying text and captions. I recognize some photos from previous pulications, but they are classic shots that deserve inclusion in a book like this. My only complaint is the absence of any examples of naval aircraft. Given the huge numbers of carrier-based aircraft in the Pacific I expected at least some token examples of severely damaged warbirds sprawled on carrier decks.
