Editorial Reviews

From the Author

There is some ambiguity about where Shot of Tequila fits into the Jack Daniels series.

Technically, it is the first book in the series, because it takes place before Jack becomes a Lieutenant. But it really isn't Jack's book. She's a supporting character, not the main one. The main character is a mobster named Tequila.

Tequila later appears in Serial Killers Uncut, Spree, and Last Call.

I purposely write each of my books so it can be read without any prior knowledge of any of the others. If you want to start on the last book and work backwards, or start in the middle, you can still enjoy the series without missing anything.

That said, some readers do want a chronological list of events in Jack's life. So here it is.

Besides the eight Jack Daniels novels, Jack and her cohorts have appeared as supporting characters in several other books and stories. Here's the order, from her years as a rookie cop, to the future.

I recently found Konrath via a posting on the Kindle boards which took me to his website/blog which then took me to his books. I just finished Shot of Tequila and his 6 Jack Daniel's books (the series that starts with Whiskey Sour) and I have enjoyed them all! A mix of humor, horror, and action all in the perfect combination that can't be beat.

On a personal note, I wanted to share an observation I had while reading this book with Mr. Konrath and sent him an email. Not only did he respond with great warmth and kindness, he responded the same day. It is really a pleasure to have such a intimate relationship with an author of books you enjoy. Another positive for indie/self-published Kindle authors! :)

From the first page, this book is like stepping into a fun house. It's a fast, wild ride that rarely slows down. I found myself connecting with and rooting for Tequila the entire time. The violence is like a Tarentino movie, over the top and there are some disturbing images, so be warned. I enjoyed the read and the ride and would recommend it if you like exciting action thrill rides.

If you like a play by play of what is happening and how they got shot, this book is for you. Way too gory, but I continued to read it becasue I thought the main character would become more human and likeable, so not the case. I wouldn't recommend this book for a light read or at all for that matter. Did not live up to my expectations.

I have read a couple of Konrath's books before and really liked the Jack Daniels character. So, I was eager to read this book. But it was a big let-down to me. This time, Jack lacks the humor I enjoyed about her so much before. The book is dark and kind of sad. I can't recommend it.

Be prepared for depravity, violence, blood, gore and maniacal behavior all thru this book. Regardless of this, the interaction between Tequila and Jack has its moments and some faint , clever humor.

I don't start one Konrath's books after I buy it until I know I have time to read the entire book.

This one was no different. I read it from start to finish with only breaks for the bathroom and something to snack on.

The thing I like about Konrath's Jack series books is they are good cop stories but they are funny as well. The characers are believable - you feel like you know them. Probably because you know someone who is really like the character.

This book is worth the price of the Kindle edition and you'll read it in one sitting.

Sorry, but this is trash. I read 20 pages and stopped. Erased it off my Kindle so as not to contaminate the other books in it. Badly written and badly researched. Even trash writing should have a smidge of verisimilitude. This has none.

Shot of Tequila is a hard-hitting, violent, and excellent read by J.A. Konrath. Tequila is a mob enforcer framed for stealing from his boss. We are treated to an early version of Jack Daniels and a thinner version of her partner Herb Benedict. We see a small glimpse into Jack's doomed marriage to Alan Daniels. There were some genuinely emotional passages involving Tequila's upbringing and his love for his sister, which leavened the violence and mayhem somewhat.

If there is one quibble, it's that Tequila seems to be superhuman and virtually impervious to pain. He takes an inhuman amount of punishment, yet is still able to function.
