A Shot of Whiskey and A Prayer May not Be Enough,
By
This review is from: Shot of Whiskey & A Prayer (Audio CD)
Danni Leigh's new effort deviates from her Decca CD "29 Nights" in at least two ways. The songs here are a little mellower and definitely more radio friendly than those in "29 Nights." In fact the entire CD is more uncluttered in its instrumentation allowing Leigh's voice to be at the forefront. This certainly is a delght because you can hear her vulnerability in her phrasing in the sparse bluesy "Shiver of Lonesome."Second, this CD has more songs from other outside writers. In fact, Leigh only co-wrote 3 songs here. The rest comes from the pens of Kevin Welch, Leslie Satcher, Stacy Dean Campbell, Charlie Robison, Janne Brown, Robin Lee, Paul Kennerley, Al Anderson and others. So you can see from the list that Leigh has enlisted some of Nashville's heavyweights here. All of these work to Leigh's advantage as they provide diversity in terms of melodies and tempoes. There's the poppish radio friendly "I Don't Feel That Way Anymore," the balladry "Back in Your Arms Again," and the cleverly worded "Chain Gang." Though this is a good album, I have a few criticisms: though there's a variety of melodies and tempoes throughout the album, there is a pervasive theme of unrequited love and sadness runs throughout. In today's country musical scene it wouldn't hurt to include a few more positive love songs. Also, though many of the songs are good, there's no song that jumps out with "hit" written all over it. The first single "Honey I Do" (previously cut by its co-writer Stacy Dean Campbell) could work in the hands of a more established artist but definitely not for an artist who is trying to break through. It's a tad too mundane. "Longnecks, Cigarettes" could work but again the lyrically it is your typical cry-in-your-beer song. There's nothing particularly strong to warrant a hit. So I am not surprised that Monument Records almost shelved this CD; it's a good CD but it could be better.

Country Music Is Here To Stay....,

This review is from: Shot of Whiskey & A Prayer (Audio CD)
Danni Leigh's "A Shot of whiskey and A Prayer" is what country music is all about. There is so much energy in this cd it's hard to listen to it without tapping your feet and singing along. This scorching hot country singer has everything it takes to make it REAL BIG...Killer looks, and a sound that has been missing from country music...not to mention a talent the size of Texas. It's hard to decide which song is our favorite because they are all sensational...Danni Leigh, YOU ARE AWESOME!!! Your biggest fans, Rose & Barry Santo

By Angel Steel (West Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shot of Whiskey & A Prayer (Audio CD)
This Cd is great, Finally we get our True Country Back. Danni Leigh is True Country, Her style is just what we want. I am tired of these "so called Country Artists." Danni Leigh is just what we need to get us back on track. All of these songs are great. Let's face it Danni Can sing those Country Songs. Hey she can WRITE them too. Longnecks, Cigarettes tells us like it is. Her style is the type Country Music is all about. The music that is out there isn't worth listening too. Danni Has a style that brings us back to those old country songs that we grew up to. This CD should be Number 1.Lets get more of these types of songs. Way to go Danni Leigh~You are the BEST.Your Country Music fans Angel & Doc Steel
