3.0 out of 5 stars I don't know
Great voice. Average songs. But, production? It becomes very obvious that the two producers have chosen to use this album to spotlight their musical abilities. There are styles of music (Metallica, for instance) when it is appropriate for the guitars to overshadow the vocals. But, not country. If you believe a country singer need country musicians to back her up,...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Shot of Whiskey and A Prayer May not Be Enough, April 6, 2001
This review is from: Shot of Whiskey & A Prayer (Audio CD)
Danni Leigh's new effort deviates from her Decca CD "29 Nights" in at least two ways. The songs here are a little mellower and definitely more radio friendly than those in "29 Nights." In fact the entire CD is more uncluttered in its instrumentation allowing Leigh's voice to be at the forefront. This certainly is a delght because you can hear her vulnerability in her phrasing in the sparse bluesy "Shiver of Lonesome."

Second, this CD has more songs from other outside writers. In fact, Leigh only co-wrote 3 songs here. The rest comes from the pens of Kevin Welch, Leslie Satcher, Stacy Dean Campbell, Charlie Robison, Janne Brown, Robin Lee, Paul Kennerley, Al Anderson and others. So you can see from the list that Leigh has enlisted some of Nashville's heavyweights here. All of these work to Leigh's advantage as they provide diversity in terms of melodies and tempoes. There's the poppish radio friendly "I Don't Feel That Way Anymore," the balladry "Back in Your Arms Again," and the cleverly worded "Chain Gang."

Though this is a good album, I have a few criticisms: though there's a variety of melodies and tempoes throughout the album, there is a pervasive theme of unrequited love and sadness runs throughout. In today's country musical scene it wouldn't hurt to include a few more positive love songs. Also, though many of the songs are good, there's no song that jumps out with "hit" written all over it. The first single "Honey I Do" (previously cut by its co-writer Stacy Dean Campbell) could work in the hands of a more established artist but definitely not for an artist who is trying to break through. It's a tad too mundane. "Longnecks, Cigarettes" could work but again the lyrically it is your typical cry-in-your-beer song. There's nothing particularly strong to warrant a hit. So I am not surprised that Monument Records almost shelved this CD; it's a good CD but it could be better.

Danni Leigh's "A Shot of whiskey and A Prayer" is what country music is all about. There is so much energy in this cd it's hard to listen to it without tapping your feet and singing along. This scorching hot country singer has everything it takes to make it REAL BIG...Killer looks, and a sound that has been missing from country music...not to mention a talent the size of Texas. It's hard to decide which song is our favorite because they are all sensational...Danni Leigh, YOU ARE AWESOME!!! Your biggest fans, Rose & Barry Santo

This Cd is great, Finally we get our True Country Back. Danni Leigh is True Country, Her style is just what we want. I am tired of these "so called Country Artists." Danni Leigh is just what we need to get us back on track. All of these songs are great. Let's face it Danni Can sing those Country Songs. Hey she can WRITE them too. Longnecks, Cigarettes tells us like it is. Her style is the type Country Music is all about. The music that is out there isn't worth listening too. Danni Has a style that brings us back to those old country songs that we grew up to. This CD should be Number 1.Lets get more of these types of songs. Way to go Danni Leigh~You are the BEST.Your Country Music fans Angel & Doc Steel

5.0 out of 5 stars What an amazing cd!, March 20, 2001

It's about time this album is finally released, after all Danni Leigh went through with the making of the album then being dropped from her record lable, it's amazing that this album even seen the shelves. but it was definitly worth the wait. I just hate the fact that as good as this cd is radio will never play it, people will never hear it, just because she actually is country! She actually writes music and she is true to herself and her roots. i'm more than tired of pop music taking over our country music stations. If the dj's had any taste they'd give Danni a shot, you can take any song on this album and measure it up against any song on the charts right now, and Danni will blow it out of the water! I would recommend this album to anyone who loves TRUE country music, what a find!

5.0 out of 5 stars Old School Country, August 7, 2002

I first heard of Danni Leigh when I read a review of her newest album in the paper. I soon was on Morpheus looking if there were any of her songs. The limited selection wasnt enough so I went out and bought her 3 CDs. Every song on this Album is awesome. Although most are about what gives country music a bad name (heart break, booze, etc.) these songs are still catchy and are very well wrote. I'm dissapointed that Danni isnt a hit yet. Her music is too country for today's country radio stations. So if you are looking for someone new with the old country sound invest in Danni Leigh's CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Danni Returns, February 16, 2002
This review is from: Shot of Whiskey & A Prayer (Audio CD)
After Decca Nashville collapsed in 1998, Danni Leigh was left labeless. Not too far after she signed with Monument, but that was short lived. Two singles from this album were released and country didn't embrace them, so they released Danni from her contract. However, in an odd move, they decided to release the album she recorded for them, A SHOT OF WHISKEY AND A PRAYER, after she was off contract. Its nice for the fans to have. This album features some songs very much like what you'd find on 29 NIGHTS, but Danni also grows as an artist. Some highlights include the upbeat "Honey I Do", "Shiver of Lonesome", "Cruel Heart", and many more. If you liked 29 NIGHTS give this one a try, its just as good and well worth having!

5.0 out of 5 stars True blue, April 13, 2003
This review is from: Shot of Whiskey & A Prayer (Audio CD)
Danni Leigh is refreshingly country when country is going pop. A little disappointed by Faith Hill and LeAnn Rimes' turns for the worse, I found Danni Leigh a pleasing return to traditional roots country. With a honky-tonk flair that puts her side-by-side with Dwight Yoakam, Leigh deserves that hat she wears. No mainstream female artist today can keep it countrier, and no one can sound as good. Her voice has a deep resonant twang sporting influences from the best of the past, and the songs are all true blue country heart. Thank god for Danni Leigh...she reminds us all that pure country is still alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Traditional country alive and well in the new millenium, September 1, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Shot of Whiskey & A Prayer (Audio CD)
Danni Leigh may be too traditional for American country radio, but there is still a substantial market for this type of music and Danni is serving that market extremely well. She has sometimes been called a female Dwight Yoakam, and it's not difficult to see why. Danni can rock when she chooses too, without straying from her traditional country sound. While others are driven by an ambition to sell millions (and sometimes succeed in producing high quality pop-country which does just that), Danni records music which, while firmly rooted in tradition, has a sufficiently modern edge to have a broader appeal, without upsetting traditionalists - just like Dwight.

As far as I can tell, all the songs are originals. What'cha gonna do was written by Kevin Welch, but I don't think he recorded the song himself. In any case, he couldn't have done it any better than Danni. All eleven songs here are typical traditional country songs of love, heartbreak, drinking and the like. You've heard these kind of songs before and will hear plenty more in the futue, but Danni is one of the best and most exciting singers of this kind of music.

Excellent record, much better than the next one "divide and conquer". Specially the track "trying to get over you" which has a lot of rhythm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Follow Up, July 11, 2007
This review is from: Shot of Whiskey & A Prayer (Audio CD)
Danni Leigh remains very strong in this second album. The music makes no apologies, it's aggressive and strong, definitely 100-proof. If you like tame music, this isn't for you. If you want something that you can't help but stomp your feet to, this is it. Danni does the uptempo, energetic stuff superbly, but also shows on this album she can do some slower, even kind of haunting stuff. Great album by great singer. Why didn't she get more radio time?
