By Bass player Brad "Rad Metal Brad" (NJ, Linden) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shotgun Messiah (Audio CD)
This is Shotgun Messiah at their best. This is before they sold out to the sound of the 90's.If your lookin for some 80's metal that's tough rocks and is anthem party fun, then this is your piece of sweet Cherry Pie right here.1.Bop City(9/10)Great rockin tune.A party favorite of mine.If you like the 80's you'll love this track. 2.Don't Care Bout Nothin(8/10)Another solid metal rocker.More thrilling guitar work! 3.Shout it Out(7/10)This one was a club favorite I believe when they performed.Good tune! 4.Squeezin Teazin(8/10)Another cool metal song to blast in your car,Love the lyrics to this one! 5.The Explorer(instrumental)(9/10)This guy can shred up a storm.Nice fret work showing off that guitar talent. 6.Nowhere Fast(7/10)Great Track, really like it! 7.Dirt Talk(8/10)The bass on this one sounds suberb.Another cool tune for the record. 8.I'm your Love(9/10)The guitars and vocals are impressive on this one. 9.Nervous(10/10)Save the best for last.Want hi-octane electric guitar fury and great sing a long vocal chorus, then this is the one.The best track on here, it's worth buying the album for alone.A stunnigly fun song that's very impressive. The guitar work is out of this dimension. Overall if you love 80's metal buy this, you won't be sorry!

Glam Gold,
By Tommyleeselbow "TBow" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shotgun Messiah (Audio CD)
If you were into glam in the late 80's and early 90's then you'll know who this band is. I have the original album when they were called Kingpin, and that rocked, but when they moved to the States and got signed, this was a re-recording of the same material with better production, and it ROCKS!!!Highlights for me are, "Dont care bout nuthin", "Explorer" and "Nervous", but it is still one of the top played on my itunes. Harry K Cody's guitar work is outstanding, and the rest are no slouches. Beg, borrow or steal but just get this album

Hollywood hair metal with some wicked guitar,
By
This review is from: Shotgun Messiah (Audio CD)
Hollywood (by way of Sweden) hair metal band Shotgun Messiah released their self-titled debut album in 1989, when this kind of party rock ruled the airwaves. The band had just about everything necessary to be big stars in the scene - big hair, big guitar hooks, big attitude - but never really broke through to mainstream success.Shotgun Messiah's debut is fairly typical of the Hollywood rock sound. It put it somewhere between Faster Pussycat and L.A. Guns. They had that glam sound, but also some streetwise sleaze appeal. Zinny Zan's vocals were more or less screeched, and are the album's weakest element, but they're balanced by some very good guitar work by Harry Cody, who could really shred. Check out the instrumental song "The Explorer" to hear him really cut loose. The songs are pretty basic, and the lyrics are typical for the time and place, but I love this kind of rock so that doesn't bother me at all. Shotgun Messiah released a follow-up to this album in 1991 (Second Coming) before changing to a more industrial sound and then fading away. If you're a serious hair metal/glam metal/whatever you want to call it fan, you definitely need to check out Shotgun Messiah. Unfortunately this album is fairly tough to track down and expensive when you find it. Someone needs to do a proper remastered reissue of this one.

Technical Guitar Masterpiece,
By
This review is from: Shotgun Messiah (Audio CD)
I originally heard about Shotgun Messiah from my local guitar store. They had a bunch of discounted guitar books. I found this book and the guitar playing looked great, so I bought it. A couple of years later I bought the CD and I must say it's some of the best guitar playing from the 80's.What sets Harry K Cody apart is his style. It's really different than many other players at the time. He can shred, but instead chooses to play more tasty melodic licks. And he is a master of the tremolo system. That one part in the explorer is awesome when he dive bombs, the song cuts out and then he just makes noise with the strings. Truly genius. But man, as good as the band is, the singer is terrible. Zinny Van Zan or whatever is continually off key. How could the musicians not think that he sounds horrendous? Sure he can hit some pretty awesome high notes, but it really is sub par. Later he had a solo career... I don't know how. I really think the band would have been much more popular with a better singer. However, as a guitar player I'm a huge fan of Harry K. Cody. Harry, if you ever read this, my hat is off to you!

Hard Hittin Hair Metal,
This review is from: Shotgun Messiah (Audio Cassette)
I'm a Hair Metal fanatic and I've been going through a lot of old Hair Metal cassettes I just bought. I went through a ton of albums and most of them sucked. I didn't have much faith in Shotgun Messiah, and then, boom, it rocked. Bop City just plain owns, the way Zinny J. San rolls his tongue to the way he just shouts it out, it all rules. Don't Care 'Bout Nothin' tells what we all feel about school, and Dirt Talk is also awesome because it's got rhythm. The rest of the album is good, but mediocre compared to those three songs.Zinny was the man, it's too bad Shotgun Messiah got rid of him. The second album was also good, but Zinny would have been better than bassist Tim Skold taking his place.

this cd rocks but the singer truly sucks on most tunes he does. the guitar work is excellent the bass & drums typical 80's hair rock beat. this was a under rated cd mostly in part to the singers bad throat in my opinion. the band done well on the follow up cd 2nd coming. they done good to have the bassist do the singing.the cd's strong point the guitar work is truly amazing. best song ... idont care about nothing. the cd comes with a stencel of shotgun messiah dont pay the high price for it if the cd dont have it. its a collectors piece now if you have it.

I searched and searched, but couldn't find much in the required "hooks" that are needed for a good metal song that you want to hear over and over again. There is some good lead work, but it doesn't satisfy. Check out "Second Coming" for their best stuff.
