Good foundation in hunting essentials,
By
This review is from: Shots at Big Game (Paperback)
This is a good book written by a hunting guru. It covers all the essentials of hunting big game, from equipment (caliber selection, rifle selection, slings, scopes, packs, etc), training (zeroing the rifle, firing from field positions) and special situations (firing at running game, firing at steep angles up and down, etc). Beginning hunters should get this book to come up to speed on all aspects of hunting, knowledge that would otherwise take years to acquire by hanging out at the range. Experienced hunters may find some of this book very basic, but can also find holes in their knowledge, things that they never knew. I, for example, found the chapter "Solving Mystery Misses" very helpful - I now have a theory on how I missed an easy shot on a buffalo in North Dakota once! Overall, I think this book is a good way to get grounded in the fundamentals, and makes a good reference manual.

On the subject, it is the best I have read up to now. Even if the edition dates from 1989, the information is still relevant today (2011). Craig talks a lot of his own experience. He seemed to have lived it all which can be a stretch, but it does the job to make the point. He is honest in mentioning he did not always followed the "don't do". It has plenty of pictures of Craig hunts. The book is easy to read. It doesn't drown you in history or useless information. To my mind, it covers the subject completely. He could have insisted a bit more on a few things / tricks and more explanatory drawings would have been nice.

A great book that covers much more than just shooting technique. Highly reccomended for the new hunter and for the more experienced there is plenty to discover too. Covers such topics and calibre and rifle selection, ballistics in the field and shooting positions in the field. Many more usefull topics and information. It was refreshing to read a book that does not buy into the short magnum cartridge hype. A very balanced and reasonable shooting manual.

Book was in nice shape, but I do not recall reading there was no cover to the book. Would have liked to have had that, but otherwise I am pleased with the book.
