Product Description

This is a compact disc "vinyl replica deluxe" with the same packaging as the original LP in CD format (cardboard sleeve). Brand new, original, factory-shrinkwrapped, limited edition CD release. This 1979 release was Moon Martin's second album and featured the original version of the song Cadillac Walk that was covered successfully by Mink DeVille, and Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor) that Robert Palmer was to turn into a top 40 hit.

I'm going to tailor this review toward the 2012 hi-res re-releases of his first three LP's, "Shots From a Cold Nightmare", "Escape From Domination" and "Street Fever". That would ass-u-me you the reader know of the greatness of Moon Martin and are considering paying the full re-issue price for the improved sound quality as you know they are classic power-pop/rock records of the day. Without getting all audiophile-snobby here and risk anyone not buying these, they are a VAST improvement over any of the re-releases and compilations put out by EMI/various Euro labels over the years-especially the first EMI one from 1999 with audible tape warbles and speed changes on the transfers!. The packaging here is classy though not collector grade. There are no bonus tracks, out-takes etc, (I was hoping at least "Havana Moon" from the Euro Street Fever LP would be included), but again I applaud the effort and overall execution. These are by far the best CD versions available of these classic LP's, the sound quality (they're bright to say the least but manageable and not compressed to death although it's noticable) to a fan who doesn't have the ability to rip their own hi res versions from pristine vinyl should be worth it.

But with that said I do question the target audience here. Most true fans know the earlier CD releases sucked, so we either ripped vinyl, found someone who did and got a copy, or played with the earlier CD reissues the best we could. I would think that even one extra track or some liner notes from Moon, or Jude Cole, or any of the Artists who covered his songs would make those of us die-hard fans who own all the bootleg concerts, fixed the audio ourselves, etc... buy it for the new packaging alone.

Don't believe the 3 star review in this section. This is THE Moon Martin disc to own (not counting best of, of course) and contains not only several killer songs but the performances are just as great. "Hot night in Dallas" is in my opinion the best song he ever recorded. And his performances of the "hits" are just as good as the other artists who cashed in on the hits.

Along with Ian Gomm, Moon Martin's music comes from the same era. I've always had the impression that Moon Martin was very underated and not as well known as he should have been. The music on this CD is excellent. "Cadillac Walk" which Mink Deville made famous, comes from Moon Martin and so does "Bad case of loving you" that Robert Palmer made famous. You won't be disappointed with this CD.

A classic rock album. Moon Martin is considered a rockabilly musician, but most of this is straight rock to me.

Moon Martin's first album as a solo artist was a watershed for him as a songwriter. This album gave Mink DeVille "Cadillac Walk" and Robert Palmer "Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor Doctor)" just to name the two biggies. Problem was, both of those artists actually sounded better on Martin's songs than Martin did, as this album has a live sound but thin production. That does not diminish from the fact that items like "Paid Killer" or "Victim of Romance" are ace bits of songwriting (and from the titles, should clue you in on Martin's view of relationships). And while Martin has a distinct voice, it isn't captured on "Shots" as well as it would be on "Street Fever" or "Escape From Domination" (where he managed a hit of his own with "Rolene"). As a relic of 80's New Wave singer/songwriters, "Shots From a Cold Nightmare" is a good work from a man who had better albums to come. Bonus points for the oddball cover of the Beatles' "All I've Got To Do."
