4.0 out of 5 stars Merriment, mockery and mad Irish, May 25, 2008
This review is from: If I Should Fall From Grace With God [Expanded] (US Version) (MP3 Download)
The Pogues are up there with Fairport Convention as one of the top folk tradition/rock fusion bands. You can't listen to their upbeat songs without wanting to get up and dance and even the sad ones, like "Fairytale of New York" will bring an ironic smile to your lips.

This is an eclectic collection of traditionals and current music.

"Worms" you've heard the song before as a child, but not quite like this.

"Fairytale of New York," this song, which is co-performed with Kirsty MacColl (daughter of Ewan), received fresh attention with the release of "PS I love you," it's a bitter Christmas for an old man in a drunk tank:

I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me, babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you

"Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham Six" is the tale of some unfortunate Irishmen who were caught for a bombing they didn't do:

There were six men in Birmingham
In guildford theres four
That were picked up and tortured
And framed by the law
And the filth got promotion
But they're still doing time
For being Irish in the wrong place
And at the wrong time....

This CD is of many moods. You'll find something you like here regardless of how you are feeling. It's definitely one of this group's best and well worth having at the price.

Rebecca Kyle, May 2008

What a fun, strong LP. They love their Irish roots, but they love their rock n roll too. Great lyrics and story telling along with full powered music. I listened to this for months when it first came out and now my ipod keeps reminding me how great this music is.

This is a great cd if you are in the mood to listen to some great Irish music, it turns any day into st. patrick's day, and makes the guinness taste that much better!
