Tom Knew It August 6, 2010
When it has came down to Tom Petty, he definitely has been one of the very few artists on his own and with The Heartbreakers, that can really deliver a stong groove when really great songs come around. That is the case with I Should Have Known It, the lead single from his first album with The Heartbreakers in 8 years, Mojo. The song definitely delivers pretty well, with a simple rift, and a strong style in his voice. While the song isn't as strong as The Heartbreakers bigger songs like Refugee and Mary Jane's Last Dance have stood out for years, it flows very nicely. Especially since this is the first song Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers came alive with since the death of Howie Epstein, whom died of a drug overdose after being let go from the group in 2002. Overall, while it isn't as strong as Tom Petty's bigger songs over the years, it still is a much better song than the junk other acts like Rihanna, Katy Perry and Justin Beiber have delivered this past year.

"I Should Have Known It" is the first single off of the new Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers disk, "Mojo". Man, but this is one killer track. Petty and the boys have come to pretty much define the term "classic rock", but this song takes the band to new heights. They sound refreshed, they sound reinvigorated, they sound like a band with a mission. This particular track works a full-on Led Zeppelin vibe, so much so that it wouldn't sound out of place as a lost B-side from "Houses of the Holy" or "Presence". It's a hard-rocker that lets the band expand their sound. The real revelation here is longtime Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. Campbell has always been regarded as one of the better players in rock guitar, but he's also been known for his restraint. Here he has been given the opportunity to cut loose and PLAY, and he makes the most of it. He lets fly with a wicked slide solo midway through the song, then takes a second solo to close the track. It's as if he has just been dying to let out his inner Jimmy Page all these years.

Petty's vox is all snarl, the rhythm section is tight, the groove is undeniable. If you're an old fan, you'll love it. If you're a younger fan just discovering the band, this is a great way to get introduced. I can't recommend it enough. I crank this song every time I hear it. It's proof positive that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are still one of the most vital and important American rock bands. This is crazy good, kids, crazy good.
