Until now, the only movie games I found that I could enjoy with a broad spectrum of people were the Scene It? movie DVD/board game and Reel Clues. Both of these games have their advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantages of these games are largely overcome in Shout about Movies.
This game is fast-paced, diverse, and generally well-conceived. The variety of questions and the creativity in presentation make this game tons of fun. I have played with large groups (7-10 people) whose movie knowledge ranges from movie buff to casual viewer, and although there were some who were frustrated because they didn't perform as well as other players, everyone had at least a couple questions where they were the first to shout out the answer to and, most importantly, everyone had fun. Everything is handled by the DVD interface. I particularly like the way it keeps score. The first time we played, we assumed that we would have to remember how many points each team scored during the 10-question rapid-fire rounds. But to our pleasant surprise, after each round it complete the DVD does a question-by-question re-cap and asks which team answered it correctly. This actually enhanced enjoyment quite a bit since not only did we not have to count answers during the actually game play, it also gave the group a chance to relive the excitement that occurred when shouting out answers. The game can only be used three times, which is disappointing (hence my durability score). But when we thought about it, for about $20 our group of seven had over two hours of excellent entertainment for the evening. In our case the choices on the table were a) all go out for dinner (very interactive, at least $8/person, probably much more) b) all go to a movie (no interaction between group members, about $8/person) c) play Shout about Movies (very interactive, and about $3/person) So it seems pricey, but when compared to these entertainment options it really isn't that bad. And it provided much more fun than any of the other options probably would have. Obviously, there will always be a place for games that can be played many times, but I know that I will welcome Shout about Movies as a gift and will suggest it for future large-group gatherings.

My friends and I, all in college, are major movie buffs, so when another friend told me about the game, I was eager to try it. Some parts are tough, but with the team setup of the game, it seems to even out. Favourite rounds were Still Crazy: a round where scenes are built piece by piece, a word association round: 6 clues are provided and the idea is to name the movie, and the quotes round, of course! The hardest rounds were the matching and the trivia rounds. Still, we had great fun. Its better if the teams are evenly matched, then its more fun. The main objection I have is that in the 8 rounds, many of the movies are dated and overused. There are great ones, though...Rain Man, Cast Away!! Also, this game is linear in progression, there is no variation in the order of the questions. Scoring uses the honour system. There are 3 games, each lasting around 45 minutes at the very fastest, its the same as the cost of a regular DVD and is much more fun with lots of people. I have bought this for several people and some of my friends have as well. Recently I played a game where a 12 year old and an 82 year old were playing so don't worry about the age thing, both enjoyed it. Really, I recommend it.

THere is literally nothing from the horror/action/sc-fi on this game so unless you watch crappy chick flicks you probally wont get many questions right. The main problem however is not the ganes content but it's performance. It constantly freezes when in the middle of a game which is beyond frustrating, the load times take forever, some of the rounds are braindead and pointless. I would not recommened this game to anyone if not just for the fact it locks-up every 4 out of 5 games, but the film styles it covers are pretty biased.

This is a really fun family game. Easy to work on DVD player and if you love movies or tv shows you will have a great time. A friend loaned me the first one and I bought more. Totally fun.

We took this game on a family ski trip and had a dozen players. We played boys vs. girls and we girls got our tails kicked on the movie version!! In the other versions (music & TV) it was much more evenly matched. We all enjoy the Shout About games and think they are great fun for all ages. The only downside is that there are only 3 games per DVD so once you have played through the games they are repetitive.

This game is so much fun. All you need is a DVD player and TV. It's a great game for a large group, but also for only two players. Everyone who played it, loved the game.

The "Shout About" line of DVD games are a great way of getting people together.
We play teams (at least 3-5 people on each) and it is always a noisy and fun crowd.

My boyfriend and I picked it up on a whim at Wal-Mart. I must say, we had about 3 hours of game playing time. And for me the best part was that I not only beat him, but I demolished him 3 games in a row!
In all seriousness, this game is tons of fun, however, like other reviewers have mentioned, you play it once and it becomes another piece of junk collecting dust.

Fun Game but Useless After 3 Times,

I saw Shout About Movies on TV and thought it would make a fun gift. Turns out I was right, the game is fantastic and great fun. The trivia ranges from Quotes, Movie Stills and Scenes from Movies.
The only problem is that after you play the title's initial 3 games, the disc is useless. You see, the Shout About Movies gives you 3 games to play at the start. Each game has the same layout of rounds, but uses different questions. Sure questions are different between games, but if you replay a game, you get the same questions and answers thus ruining the replay factor. For $20+ I would expect a little more than 3 games. I really like the game, but I can't justify spending another $20 for the other discs with zero replay. |
