3.0 out of 5 stars Room for improvisation
This is a book for an intermediate player who doesn't mind doing some improvisation. The bass line is very monotonous and boring. However, if you're willing to mix it up a little then this is the book for you. The song selection is identical to "Timeless Praise" also by Phillip Keveren, however the arrangements are more developed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phillip Keveren's "Shout to the Lord" Piano Solo Book, July 11, 2006

This review is from: Shout to the Lord!: The Phillip Keveren Series - Piano Solo (Paperback)
Phillip Keveren's piano solo arrangements included in this 'Late Intermediate' ability level book are 14 contemporary worship songs. In addition to the title piece, "Shout to the Lord", other popular song arrangements are "Oh Lord, You're Beautiful" and "Shine, Jesus, Shine."
Each song begins with a separate page with the words of the song and comments from the arranger. Knowing the words makes playing the arrangement easier and more meaningful.
The arrangements vary in musical style: some include a compatible and familiar classical theme, one begins with a music box sound, another incorporates an old, well-known children's song.
Mr. Keveren has used a Mozart setting for my favorite piece in this book, "Thy Word." All of the song arrangements in "Shout to the Lord" are pleasing to the ear, flow smoothly in transitions and are especially enjoyable to play. I highly recommend this piano solo book to provide delightful music for personal joy or to prepare for use in a church setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent solo piano arrangements for intermediate pianist, April 5, 2006
This review is from: Shout to the Lord!: The Phillip Keveren Series - Piano Solo (Paperback)
I bought this book to use in church for preludes, offertories, and incidental music. It has some very lyrical arrangements of contemporary Christian songs. Most songs are 2-4 minutes long and contain 2-3 key changes and moving music lines, especially in the left hand. I am an upper-intermediate level pianist and find these arrangements toward the top end of what I can do, but it is worth putting the work into it. Some of the pieces are arrangements that put the contemporary songs into more classical-sounding forms, which I do not like as well, but overall, I am very pleased. Based on this book I will try other Keveren piano solo books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow....., October 26, 2005
This review is from: Shout to the Lord!: The Phillip Keveren Series - Piano Solo (Paperback)
Amazing arrangements from the modern arranging legend Philip Kevern! Beautiful pieces, great selection, and fun to play (if you can handle all the chord changes!)

Uplifting to the Nth degree, but challenging, this may not be for everyone...he does however have lots of easier stuff ofr beginners and early intermediate level in this same strain of worship and adoration arrangements.

I highly recommend this to any music lover with an ear for fresh and beautiful arragements of songs we've heard a billion times ! He really does make them new and exciting ! go for it !

I was looking for a more advanced arrangement, so this wasn't the book for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, however a little more difficult than some of his other books, and not jazzy enough, December 29, 2009

This review is from: Shout to the Lord!: The Phillip Keveren Series - Piano Solo (Paperback)
After already owning two of his other songbooks, I wanted a songbook with more contemporary music and I thought that this book would be great. I do enjoy it, but I am a little disappointed because I thought that he wrote all jazz arrangements. This one is also a little more challenging on some pieces than any of his other arrangements that I have played.

I was very disapointed in this songbook. The words are printed on a separate page from the music score. It is really for solo piano playing, and not to be used to play and sing the words with.
