5.0 out of 5 stars Great Summer Album
Perfect album for the summer... lots of great songs you can't wait to blare through your speakers with the windows down.

Highlights:
Thinking 'bout Somethin' - Any song with perfect use of cowbell is a-ok in my book. Adding Weird Al to the mix? Gold. This song is pure summer.
Give A Little - This song with get everyone moving on their feet. I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Very fun album
"Shout It Out" is a very fun, retro, pop album. It is impossible to sit still while listening to several of the tracks. The album lacks substance, however, and slows down considerably after "Make It Out Alive". But the several stand out songs make it worthwhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Summer Album, June 8, 2010

Perfect album for the summer... lots of great songs you can't wait to blare through your speakers with the windows down.

Highlights:
Thinking 'bout Somethin' - Any song with perfect use of cowbell is a-ok in my book. Adding Weird Al to the mix? Gold. This song is pure summer.
Give A Little - This song with get everyone moving on their feet. I can't NOT listen to it in my car without boppin' around.
And I Waited - The drum intro alone pulls you in. The lyrics are fun to sing along to.
Me Myself and I - Beautiful piano and a great album exit song.

Could Live Without: All tho I absolutely LOVE the story/theme/verses behind Voice In The Chorus, the 'chorus' itself is a bit redundant.

Missing: Ike Solo??? Where are you??? First album ever without an Isaac solo... my poor heart can't take it.

I'm giving it five stars because even Hanson's 'worst song' is still better than 98.76% of the crap that's played on the radio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait!, June 9, 2010

Michelle DeMeuse (Sturgeon Bay, WI USA) - See all my reviews

This Hanson record not only met my expectations but exceeded them. It's fun, catchy, a little sassy. I love it. It sounds fresh and perfect to blast on the stereo all summer.

Criticism that the lyrics aren't as deep as some would like baffle me. Hanson can't win. They've had so many beautiful lyrics and moving song topics over the years, which people ragged on for not being upbeat enough, and now they do an album of pure fun, old school pop music and everyone talking about the lack of lyrical depth. Given the average intelligence of lyrics I hear in "popular" music, and all the mainstream emo bullcrap and rappers singing about smackin' something, this album is leaps and bounds above the rest. I'm not saying it's super deep, but that's exactly what the album calls for. FUN. It's a throwback to older days when pop wasn't a dirty word. The horns add extra zest, and it's just refreshing all the way around.

Stand out tracks: Give a little, Kiss Me When You Come Home, And I Waited and Use Me Up

Go get this album! You won't regret it! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars If you liked "This Time Around" . . ., June 8, 2010
By
This review is from: Shout It Out (Audio CD)
If you liked "This Time Around", chances are you'll love "Shout It Out". The last two Hanson albums ("The Walk" and "Underneath") were gentler and more introspective, but "Shout It Out" is an upbeat party for the ears. Taylor's voice is as fabulous as ever, and he sings lead on most of the tracks.

The brothers' lean, tight core is supplemented by a fat, funky horn section on several tracks, notably "Thinkin' 'Bout Somethin'" and "Voice in the Chorus". Musically, Hanson does what they do best--gospel-tinged vocals, bluesy riffs and classic rock rhythms dripping with pop hooks and catchy choruses that you can't get out of your head. Lyrically, things are a bit lighter than in recent years--no African orphans appear on this album--with the notable exception of the ballad "Me, Myself, and I", which is the darkest of the songs on this collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Band, Catchy Tunes, but not their best, June 17, 2010
This review is from: Shout It Out (Audio CD)
If you haven't heard Hanson since their 90s heartthrob days, it's worth giving them a fresh listen. They just might surprise you with their musical integrity and pop/rock sensibility. They've managed to do something dozens of child stars and one-hit-wonders failed to do: keep on doing what they're good at, despite the naysayers.

After the emotional and mature effort of 2007's THE WALK, I was looking forward to this album. I liked the direction their music had taken--strong messages, solid hooks, and a very raw live-from-the-floor feel. SHOUT IT OUT delights in a different way. It is fun, funky, and takes the band back to its 50s and 60s roots.

THINKING 'BOUT SOMETHING is the single for the non-fans. Catchy cowbell and dazzling horns certainly make it one of the dance tunes of the summer, and will probably win them a few new listeners.

Songs like CARRY YOU THERE and MY, MYSELF AND I have a more distinctly "hanson" feel to them. A sound that is a little more grounded and heartfelt.

I give this album a 4 for catchy tunes and solid musicianship. The missing star is for lyrics, which have been stronger in the past (as in BLUE SKY: this hope for answered questions / I swear is true conviction / I stare into the distance / there is no truth in sight) and the lack of lead vocals from oldest brother Issac, who has arguably the smoothest and most technically sound vocals of the band.

Pick up this album for good summer listening, and you won't be disappointed. For something more substantive, see their 2007 release THE WALK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Hanson Album Yet!, June 17, 2010
This review is from: Shout It Out (Audio CD)
I've been a fan ever since the beginning, and I have to say that Shout It Out is the music I've been waiting for them to make all this time. It represents a return to their R&B roots and it's essentially a celebration of what it means to be Hanson.

It's hard for me to pick favorite and least favorite songs, because honestly this is one of the only albums of any band that I've ever owned that I can listen to repeatedly without skipping a single song. If push came to shove, "Give a Little," "These Walls," and "Me Myself and I" are probably my three favorites, while "And I Waited" is one that I don't quite love just yet, although it's growing on me quickly.

If you're thinking about checking out this band, THIS is the album to listen to first. It would give a casual listener a chance to get what these guys are really all about musically. While I have enjoyed all of their albums to date, Shout It Out really is (for me) their finest and most honest work to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album they have ever done., June 10, 2010
This review is from: Shout It Out (MP3 Download)
This is an amazing album. I am a die hard Hanson fan, but I'll admit that The Walk was not my favorite of theirs. It was slightly unfocused, and felt a little uninspired.

I loved Hanson on Underneath. The snap-your-fingers songwriting, which has always been their strength, was at their best. Every song was fun and memorable and unique. Shout It Out recalls that fantastic vibe, but it's even better. It's even more passionate. It's even more fun. It's the kind of music that makes you want to dance around the living room.

For anyone who has ever liked Hanson... this is their best work, don't miss it.

For anyone who is skeptical of the "one hit wonder" 90s band... there is no trace of the band that did Mmmbop on this album. For fans of gospel singers like Marc Broussard and Dave Barnes, or piano-heavy singer songwriters like Ben Folds and Kate Nash, anything with a little blues, beautifully crafted pop, and a lot of heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just great music, September 21, 2011

I have to admit, all I really knew of Hanson was MmmBop and a few others from that time. Liked it, but never really pay more attention after that. I figured that if they come out with new stuff, it would be played on the radio. Just last year, I got a new ipod and somehow MmmBop came to mind. So I go to download this song and find four other albums that I never knew about. I bought Shout It Out and was hooked. It is a wonderful album of music, harmony, and words. I am now a die hard Hanson fan. They are one of the most understated bands. 100% pure talent. This album show that they can stand the test of time. They are up there with the best of them. I wish they would get the credit they deserve of being great musicians. If you want some pure great rock music. This is the one to get. I can smile about music again. There are bands that actually have talent and this is one of them.

I've never been a Hanson fan and when I saw they had a new album I was surprised to see that they were still around! I decided to finally check it out, and I am amazed! This album is honestly the first album in a LONG time that I have fallen in love with after just ONE LISTEN! I would suggest this album to anyone who just likes good music. There are fun songs as well as emotional songs.
It's just all an all around great album and I am VERY happy that I bought it!
Not one song that I don't love!

4.0 out of 5 stars Taylor Rules!, July 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Shout It Out (Audio CD)
Wow, Taylor Hansen has really grown up! First earlier with "Tinted Windows", which I think was in the car CD player for atleast two months straight, and now with this very smooth Hansen disc, "Shout It Out". The mood of the music is way cool and soothing. The bluesy, jazzy feel captures a vibe never before heard from these brothers. But it's the ballads from Taylor that have you putting the "repeat" button on. He is a vocal genius, and haunting stylist. I am currently waiting for Bret Michaels newest in the mail, and until then (maybe even after), I'll have Shout It Out in its rightful place (unless I get that Tinted Windows urge again). Listen to the music!!
