ANOTHER GREAT HBO DOCUMENTARY--SUITABLE FOR SCHOOLS & COLLEGES, December 23, 2009
This review is from: Shouting Fire: Stories From the Edge of Free Speech (DVD)
I have watched this HBO documentary on free speech twice and plan to buy it when the price comes down. Like many other recent HBO documentaries, this one covers a very important subject and does so in a serious and thought-provoking manner.
While it is obvious that the director is in favor of free speech, ample time is given to various people who argue that it ought to be limited, especially in time of war.
Good coverage is given to cases from the days of President John Adams to the days of President George W. Bush, providing an excellent historical context.
As a retired college teacher, I would recommend that teachers of American history, political science, philosophy, law, and civics might wish to buy this (or have their schools buy it) to show in their classes. It is a topic that should concern all young people, since they have the most to gain or lose in the coming decades.
