Decent but not really memorable,

This review is from: Show Boat (1993 Studio Cast Recording of the 1946 Version) (Audio CD)
Willard White's Joe is the best thing on this two disc album; he has a magnificent voice and he sings a splendid "Old Man River." As advertised, this is a recording of the show as it was staged in the 1946 revival. For those familiar with the complete score, it will seem an odd choice of included and excluded numbers. We get "Queenie's Ballyhoo" but not "I Still Suits Me," for example. It's a perfectly respectable recording and performance. The other voices are decent, but I never thought there was a lot of magic here (as I did with the McGlinn recording, and that is the one required recording of Show Boat). This will go on my reference shelf, but other than Willard White's numbers, I doubt I'll be playing it much. Aside from the McGlinn recording, I'd also recommend the 1962 studio cast recording with Barbara Cook, John Raitt and the wonderful William Warfield.
