a witty look the glamorous world of Indian cinema,

This review is from: Show Business: A Novel (Paperback)
Tharoor once again dazzles his reades with a look into the seedy life of Indian moviemaking. He deftly captures the sex, intrigue and all out ridiculousness of the world's largest movie industry. As someonw who has visited India many times, I enjoyed the author's portrayal of the actor's and actresses's charmed life. A great read

Amusing and enjoyable story of 'fictional' Bollywood star...,

This review is from: Show Business: A Novel (Hardcover)
Whilst reading this book it became obvious to me, at least, that the main character in this novel,Ashok, was based entirely on the real-life Bollywood star, Amitabh Bachchan. It was a satirical look at the Indian film industry and also a look at India itself through the lens of a movie star. Enjoyable and fun, especially if one is a fan of Bollywood films.

Whilst reading this book it became obvious to me, at least, that parts of this book were based on the life of India's biggest filmstar Amitabh Bachchan. In this book the hero, a famous movie star in the mad world of Bollywood narrates his experiences. The novel is essence a satirical look at the Indian film industry and also a look at India itself through the lens of a movie star. Enjoyable and fun, especially if one is a fan of Bollywood films.

the friends I have that are keen on India and its culture recommended me this book of Shashi Tharoor long ago. Last year I was involved with a mooovie shooting for a Chennai production in Spain. Reading the novel I have not only enjoyed every line of it but lived again last year experience. He does not exagerate a single bit the characters, events and astonishing facts represented in the book. And he does it with such a humour, sometimes hilarating, criticism but not offensive, like a mother would criticise her sons, that makes you live the adventures of Ashok Banjara and wish they never finish. Highly recommended

A very easy and enjoyble book, with it's bollywood theme. It begins well but down the road the book tends to rush a bit. As the character and story are based on real life figures, their stories are more complex I bet than what the writer makes us believe. I personally feel that he should have at least thanked the the man who is the hero of this novel, in the end where he acknowledges the others. Lastly it has been fun reading this book in the sense that it is a bit nostalgic, trying to associate the different stories to the different movies that I have seen.
