5.0 out of 5 stars The editor's review is BS
I think including songs like The Love Cats, or any older Cure, would have ruined the melancholy mood of this concert completely. Obviously he's one of those "you're not a real fan unless you like their old stuff" kinda guys. Well I think the Cure did their best work from Head On the Door through Wish. I mean, their old stuff is awesome too, but in a different way...

3.0 out of 5 stars mostly uninspired, but worth getting
The Cure has a reputation for being one of the best live bands ever; although a CD of a live show (or, in this case, 2 shows edited together) can never substitute for the real thing, the intensity of their live performance usually shines through. Not so in this case; it's an unfortunate compilation of mostly-uninspired performances of their singles. It would be a 2-star...

I think including songs like The Love Cats, or any older Cure, would have ruined the melancholy mood of this concert completely. Obviously he's one of those "you're not a real fan unless you like their old stuff" kinda guys. Well I think the Cure did their best work from Head On the Door through Wish. I mean, their old stuff is awesome too, but in a different way. I've been a long time Cure fan, and Wish is my favorite album, and since this concert took place shortly after Wish was released, you could only expect them to focus mainly on those songs. Wish's lyrics are amazing if you've ever bothered to really read through them, so how can you criticize songs like From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Cut or End? They're great songs. In fact, I think the song that could have been cut from here was Friday I'm In Love; I've just never been a fan. Replace that with Apart and it's a perfect concert. The biggest improvement is in A Night Like This---the guitar solo instead of the sax solo makes it a whole new song. If you're like me and Wish and Disintegration are your favorite Cure albums, you owe it to yourself to check out this live performance, it rocks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't let the editorial review fool you., October 13, 2004

Some reviewers might think it's edgy -or that it makes for good writing- to insult a body of work as heavy-handedly as the editorial reviewer for amazon.com did.

But now that the uninformed, self-righteous bunk is all over-- let's go ahead and tell the truth about this amazing live performance. Please keep in mind that I usually *hate* concert recordings....

With regard to the "disposable product" comment, all I have to say is this: a friend gave me this album for my birthday in 1994. I have listened to it more than once a week for a decade.

In other words, it stayed interesting through middle school, high school, college, and my first year of marriage. I listened to it this morning. I'm still finding new things to love about this album. And last time I looked, there wasn't a Fat Bob in sight.

If you love music that melds ethereal, mellow, Gibson archtop sound (a characteristic of classic New Order and Smiths) with driving pop rhythm-- buy Show. If you want a great CD for long car trips, buy it. If you want to stay calm in DC traffic at rush hour.... you get the idea.

A host of beautiful but not so well-known songs is offered with a few safe hits for good measure. If you're bored with overplayed Cure, this is a refreshing experience. If you just want the hits, well... this album is a great tool for broadening your taste. Don't ever settle for just the greatest hits.

And don't worry. Show isn't just for die-hard fans. I learned to love this band working my way back from it. I wasn't the only one.... my parents, who are 60, discovered them as well.

If you buy this performace in any format, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Motown Aside, Detroit has Never Sounded Better, April 15, 2001
By
This review is from: Show (Audio CD)
Recorded live at the Auburn Palace outside of Detroit during the Cure's Wish tour, this album has the perfect blend of greatest hits and thicker, harsher, guitar-driven rock. I purchased this album while still "learning" to love the Cure and repeatedly listened to songs such as "Just Like Heaven," "Inbetween Days" and "Friday I'm in Love." Over the years I've grown to appreciate the rest of its majestic and atmospheric music--songs like "Open" and "From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea" are given brilliant treatment by the band. The album dishes out many of the songs from the Wish album and a few of their other best works, but what sets this album apart from live albums by other bands is the phenomenal energy and sound quality--most live albums are either "too stale" so that you can't even tell that there was an audience roaring in appreciation, or the sound is distorted to the extent that it sounds like a poor bootleg. Show (available on VHS with encores not on any CD) is highly recommended. It also comes with a maxi-single, Sideshow, which features songs that were omitted from the band's main set list, but you can also purchase the UK version that includes all of those songs on 2 CDs. If you like this album, consider "Paris," a live CD from the same tour, but with a very different song list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rockin' live Cure performance, July 5, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Show (Audio CD)
It make me sick to think that people who clearly know nothing about the Cure are reviewing their albums for the general public. This album is a great one for those of us who love the Cure and generally enjoy live performances that don't sound exactly like the albums. The setlist is great, ranging from the poppier "Friday I'm In Love" to the more intense "Fascination Street", with classics like "The Walk" and "Just Like Heaven" thrown in for the not-quite-yet fans. The band is a little older, a little more mature, and knows a little more about what makes their music so great. This is probably also the best lineup the band has ever had. One of the things that makes the Cure so wonderful is all of the different instruments and sounds that don't quite seem like they should fit together but do beautifully. This album is no exception. Each member knows their part to play, and it comes together "just like a dream". I recommend this album especially for anyone who gets excited about live performances. It's not quite as good as actually seeing them live, but nothing is. Buy it. And while you're at it, buy every Cure album ever cut. You may soon find it's "never enough".

5.0 out of 5 stars the cure does it again, December 7, 2003
By
This review is from: Show (Audio CD)
i own 6 of the cure's albums, ranging from 1981 to 2000, so i've gotten to really know their sound and heard their sound evolve over the years. but i must say that their lives albums are what make them the most incredible band. this cd along with "concert" from '84 are both amazing. on "show", the performances are as good as the studio versions, with the best being "pictures of you" (first song i ever heard of theirs.. still my favorite), "just like heaven" (my other favorite), "a night like this", and "doing the unstuck". also notable are "trust" and "inbetween days". truly a great album, everyone should buy it, whether you're a current cure fan or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars mostly superior to the recorded versions, August 16, 2002
This review is from: Show (Audio CD)
without knowing much about the cure, i would say that this cd alone is enough to make me a real fan. having heard their "greatest hits" album, i would say that with the exception of "just like heaven", the real electrifying experience comes from hearing them live. "lullaby" was done absolutely perfectly--you can literally feel the song, its macabre rhythms, robert smith's genuinely eerie vocals, the sound effects of the "spiderman"...the concert was simply great art. the darkness of their music is chiefly what appeals to me, but the musicianship is so flawlessly done that even a naive listener like myself is amazed. buy this show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack to my teens, July 27, 2004
This review is from: Show (Audio CD)
This was one of the best live performances that I ever bought. Robert and company put on a fantastic performace of pictures of you, friday im in love, high, open, and many others. my only complaint is taht disintigration seems to be a little overlooked on this album, but its still chalk full of classic cuts from the tour. Great stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing work of art, January 4, 2002

I picked up this CD way back in the summer of '98 when I was 14 at my local Wal-Mart, not knowing a single song off of it. When I put it on, I was completely blown away. The album opens with an amazing redition of "Open" with soaring, dreamy guitars and pulsing drums as well as awesome lyrics. It then goes into other awesome hits such as the romantic "Pictures of You" the tragic beauty of "Trust" and the uplifting, joyous romps "Just Like Heaven" and "Doing the Unstuck". This album is good all the way through and there is absolutely no need to use the "skip" button on your CD player. The artwork in the booklet is very well done too, its very creative and artsy and has great photos of all the 5 members of the band (Rob Smith, Porl Thompson, Perry Bamonte, Simon Gallup and Boris Williams) as well as a sweeet fold-out poster of the whole band performing live on the stage. Last night I was listening to this CD on my bed and looking through the booklet and it was a great experience. Listening to the songs (which sound WAY better than the CD versions) and hearing the crowd cheer give you the feeling of actually being there for the concert. This CD is way better than other historic live albums such as the "Wishkah" one from Nirvana and the recent Skinny Puppy one recorden in Germany. After 4 long years this album has been with me through good times and bad and will continue to be one of my favourites; it'll probably be pretty much the same for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Greatest Hits Deal, June 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Show (Audio CD)
I just got into the Cure. ABout 5 months now. My friend got me into it. And I like them. I've always like Boys Don't Cry, but what drew me in was In Between Days, Play For Today and Just Like Heaven. Then I explored more Cure, but I didn't go out and buy Kiss Me (3x) or Head on The Door. If you're just getting into the Cure, like I am, buy this CD. It has great songs. Also, you'll wanna check out Staring At The Sea. Both are greatest Hits but you'll slowly be pulled into their other albums.

If you're a long time Cure lover... then you'll wanna pick out this CD because it's recorded live and the songs are pretty tight. The sound is great and there are variants to all the songs. GREAT CD!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars the Cure as they should be heard--live, August 10, 2000

My only complaint about this CD is that it didn't include "Fascination Street". But it's still great tho. The live version of "Pictures of You" is incredible. I saw the Cure in concert on this tour (not in Auburn Hills, Michigan tho) and the stage lighting was way kewl.
