Tanya and Jake Lassiter are married, but they didn't get married for the usual reasons, such as love and trust. They have a son, yet sleep in separate bedrooms. I don't want to give too much away...Suffice it to say that she doesn't trust her husband, or even like him, and he treats her with contempt. Their marriage is so bad that Jake departs for Africa (to work as an Engineer)soon after the wedding, leaving his young wife and baby boy to live with his understandably, bewildered parents. The book opens about 7 years later, when the little boy, doubting the existence of his father, requests that his father visit him. Tanya then writes a stiff, formal letter to her husband in Africa, asking him to visit, but never for a moment believing that he will actually return. He does return. He arrives unexpectedly on the night his parents are having a house-party, only to find his wife in the arms of another man! Being a possessive man, Jake reacts predictably...with anger. His treatment of Tanya is callous and quite nasty. But, over the next few weeks and months, Jake starts to fall in love with his wife, because he gets to know her and sees that she is a very good mother to their son. But Tanya has an ugly secret which threatens their new found happiness. I'm going through a "Janet Dailey" phase at the moment. All the books I've read so far have been quite different. "Darling Jenny" was sweet. "A Tradition of Pride" was sexy. But every book has been a superb romance in its own way.

This is a good read for a long Sunday afternoon. It starts out a typical unhappy marriage situation and you think you know exactly what is going to happen, and then "whamo", Ms Dailey hits you from behind. Really good twists and turns. You will not suspect the ending to this one.
