A "MUST READ",
By A Customer
This review is from: Show Me the Way to Go Home (Paperback)
I picked up Larry's Book, "Show me the way to go home", quite by chanceat a local book store. I was interested in Alzheimer's disease because my mother died from it a few years ago. I could not put the book down until I had read the last page. I read it again the next day and then again and again. Then I sat down and cried for a week. I found that I had fallen in Love with this handsome, dashing, man. If you have a friend or relative that is afflicted with this disease, you must read Larry's Book. He has achieved the impossible. He has given us an insight into the mind of person afflicted with this terrible disease. After reading his book and looking at his picture on the back cover, I feel that I know him well enough to call him Larry. Thank You, Larry, for your book and God Bless!Kathleen

ALZHEIMERS. It's ours too.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Show Me the Way to Go Home (Paperback)
My husband, a retired physician in internal medicine recently received the Alzheimers diagnosis. His IQ is still so high that it will be some time before it drops to 100. Meanwhile he takes his sandwich off his plate and walks around the kichen looking for the very plate he left behind. The contrast of his ability to make brilliant analysis of current world affairs and the confused searches for things he can't find is unbelievable. Yet it cannot be denied. Larry's book gave us a way to identify. It shed light and spilled grace onto those of us who, one way or another, walk the Alzheimers road. My husband has just sent copies of this book to his children so they might know what he feels inside. Thank you Larry and Mazeltov!

A highly individual experience with universal appeal,
By A Customer
This review is from: Show Me the Way to Go Home (Paperback)
Rose poignantly describes his painful experiences of living midlife with Alzheimer's disease. He recalls the early warning signs and symptoms; the process of medical diagnosis and treatment; telling friends and family; coping with the confusion, fear and anger; and family involvement in decisions of property, caregiving and support. Personal quality of life issues are addressed as the author's awareness of the beauty in the ordinariness of life is increased through this experience. A highly individual, personal experience with universal appeal. Recommended for general public library collections.

AN INSPIRATION,
By A Customer
This review is from: Show Me the Way to Go Home (Paperback)
I have heard it said that "He has achieved succes who has lived well, laughed often and loved much". Larry Rose, the author of "Show me the way to go home" has achieved success. Rose will leave this world a better place than he found it by giving us this book. It is a book that cannot be put down until you have read the last page then leaves us wanting to learn more. Rose has given us the best he has to give and has never lacked the appreciation of others that have helped him along his journey through Alzheimer's disease. His life should be an inspiration to all of us. Through his book, Rose has gained the respect of intelligent people and the love of all who have been fortunate to read it. Rose is fighting this disease with the grace of a true hero. His story in an inspiration: his memory will be a benediction. I am looking forward to reading his next book. Kathy Smith RN

Should be required reading for all caregivers/medical prof.,
By stellgui@aol.com (Lafayette, Louisiana) - See all my reviews

I am Mr. Rose's caregiver, and have had the opportunity to meet a host of wonderful people in touch with Alzheimers and its ravages on the patient as well as family and friends wo do not know what the patient is going through. As Diana McGowin has said many, many times over, and I quote, "when you have seen one Alzheimer's patient, YOU have seen ONE Alzheimer's patient." Each one of us is so different and react differently to this horrible disease. So please, use discretion and compassion when you come in contact with a diagnosed patient. They are trying to cope, and to live one day at a time, and in their own way, are walking through the long good bye with each of us.

HOPE AND UNDERSTANDING,
By A Customer
This review is from: Show Me the Way to Go Home (Paperback)
LARRY ROSE has Alzheimer's disease. It is little comfort to him that he is among the millions of others strickened with this debilitating disease. What should be of comfort to the reader is that this warm, witty, and intelligent man is willing to bare his soul and share his experiences so that we can understand more about this disease. In his touching book, SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME, Rose gives us a brief glimpse into a window of life that few understand. Rose presents each stage with the freshness of someone who knows not what the future holds. Breathtaking in its innocence, Rose's words hold special meaning to anyone who knows someone suffering from Alzheimer's disease. The book opens with a penetrating look at the "Man that was"---a brilliant electrical engineer with a thirst for knowledge and a passion for life. Rose's son, Jeff, has written a beautiful introduction that describes his joyful memories of growing up with his dad---and the deep love that exists between them. Rose's son also express his frusteration with a disease and his sadness at its striking such a wonderful and young (54) man as his father. This book is written with the goal of giving the reader a deeper understanding of the disease's affects from the inside. A perspective of someone who knows of what he speaks. SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME, is an outstanding, provocative read. Rose has not only found a way to tell us about the disease, he's also found a way to make us comprehend and empathize with sufferers around the world without once asking for pity.

Don't go through early diagnosis alone...,

My mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease at fifty years. I found Larry Rose's account of what was happening to be a wonderful way to relate to her in a way that she was unable to describe to me. This book will be a "hard to put down" account of daily life for those facing similar experiences along the way through this dibilitating illness that robs so much. Larry finds a positive light to shine on purpose in life and to keep on living. He is truly a courageous story that should not be missed. A big five star read with a human approach.

A Fascinating Story,
By Brenda Parris Sibley (Decatur, AL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Show Me the Way to Go Home (Paperback)
This is a fascinating story actually written by an Alzheimer's patient in the early stages of the disease. Larry was diagnosed at age 54. This came after his getting lost on a trip, driving more than a hundred miles out of the way of the route to his destination before realizing it. Larry tries to see the good in this, writing that he has "more compassion for people, birds, deer, and the like" and he says "If when you read this book you feel a certain sadness...let yourself be sad, but not for me...I have had a good and prosperous life...Most of all, I have had the love of some beautiful people...and I have loved them, too."

Positive insight,
By E. Smith (New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Show Me the Way to Go Home (Paperback)
I bought this book shortly after my husband had been diagnosed with Alzheimers. At that time he was 54 - the same age as Larry Rose. I found the book to be helpful & giving us both a positive outlook after being told of this dreadful diagnosis. Larry Rose allowed us to see into his life, showing us so many things that we could recognise from dealing with our own day to day problems, and always writing with a sense of humour & dignity. This book has now been passed on to my family, enabling them to better understand my husbands emotions & feelings. It will be highly recommended to the people in my support group.

A HEROIC EFFORT,
By A Customer
This review is from: Show Me the Way to Go Home (Paperback)
I just completed "Show me the way to go home". I really appreciated the description of Larry's experience of living with Alzheimer's. I am a social worker devoted to finding answers to the mysteries of this disease. I would certainly recommend this book to patient's families as well as professionals in the field. I particularly enjoyed reading about Larry's pet pig, Floyd. I was also struck by Larry's struggle to fight the disease while trying to accept it. This is perhaps a common dilemma that is not really appreciated by those not affected by this disease. You must read this book, if you want to know what living with Alzheimers is like. I am looking forward to his next book. D. K.
