This review is from: Show Off [VHS] (VHS Tape)
MGM's THE SHOW-OFF is a remake of the 1934 Spencer Tracy picture, which was a Herman Mankiewicz adaptaion of a 1924 Broadway show. The original 1926 silent photoplay of "Show-Off" starred Ford Sterling, best remembered as chief of Mack Sennett's Keystone Kops. Here, Red Skelton is the bragadocious J. Aubrey Piper, a clerk who impresses both himself and others with tall tales of his supposed exploits. When blind date Amy Fisher (Marilyn Maxwell) falls for the charming blowhard, she marries him despite her parents' strong objections. The free-spending Aubrey soon gets them both in legal hot water. As of 12/08, this movie is only available on VHS. WATCH THE BIRDIE (1950), another Skelton vehicle, is also not yet on DVD. Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 viewer poll rating found at a film resource website. (6.4) The Show-Off (1946) Red Skelton/Marilyn Maxwell/Marjorie Main/Virginia O'Brien/Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson/George Cleveland/Leon Ames/Marshall Thompson (uncredited: Grady Sutton/Charles Lane/Russell Hicks)
