Dear Professor Clements:
I just wanted to thank you for the eternally-helpful advice and wisdom that you impart in Show Runner. I'm new to being a talk show creator but I feel much better prepared for the struggle ahead after having read (and re-read x3) your book. By struggle, I mean to learn how to do the job well. My talk show is my first piece to be registered with the WGA and its development is going really well. Since I've been having many "firsts" as creator, I've been keeping a slow but steady pace with it. Should the powers-that-be give me a shot to show run my own show (I know now, after having read your book, that I won't be giving myself this job), you can be sure that I'll be having your book in arms reach even then as a constant reference. Many thanks again.

This review is from: Show Runner: Producing Variety and Talk Shows for Television (Paperback)
Show Runner is a fascinating read into the world of producing variety and talk shows for television. It is an extremely well written book, detailed in its step by step descriptions of what it is like to go from a 1st time attempt at producing a show to eventually becoming a highly successful producer.
It is a terrific book for anyone who wants to know the detailed workings of a television talk show, whether you are entering the field or are just reading for enjoyment. Written in the 1st person, Steve has used his own career to illustrate the prizes and pitfalls that are involved in producing a show. Show Runner transports the reader into the major network studio and brings the operations side of the business to life in a way that is comprehensive, interesting and humorous at the same time. As Steve writes in his introduction, his book is truly a written documentary involving virtually all aspects of the producing business. I would highly recommend Show Runner as the best book available on talk and variety show producing.

SHOW RUNNER Shows How to Succeed in TV!,
By Barbara (Atlanta) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Show Runner: Producing Variety and Talk Shows for Television (Paperback)
Steve Clements' SHOW RUNNER is two books in one--part primer about how to produce variety and talk shows for television, and it's also a tell-all memoir. The voice of years of experience in Hollywood came through loud and clear in his conversational style. Clements dishes the dirt while giving solid lessons, sometimes even with charts, about television production.
They say, "Those who can--do. And those who can't--teach." From what I read, Steve Clements does both very well. His book tells about years of experience as a top television producer, and his background as a professor comes through in a well written text that's never boring. I learned the answer to what Clements referred to as the eternal question: What does a producer do? I found out there are many kinds of producers with varying duties -line producers, segment producers, field producers and more. I would recommend SHOW RUNNER to anyone who is considering a career in television production or to people who want to find out the inside stories about television in Hollywood. It's a fun and informative read!

IGNITIATELY FLIPPED THROUGH IT,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Show Runner: Producing Variety and Talk Shows for Television (Paperback)
When this book arrived, I flipped through it, to make sure all of the pages were in tact, being as it was a used book with a remainder mark on the bottom of the book.
I would like to say, this book did not provide the information I was searching for/looking forward to. but, it is packed with basic information, if you're writing for talk shows as the title implies. Conclusion is that the information provided in this book could have been published online on a blog or website free of charge. although, i'm sure there's several sites out there that focus on this topic. I bought it a couple of years ago and just now decided to leave a review about it. I would recommend this to those of us who do not have access to the web at all times, especially for research purposes. |
