Biography

“Diamond-hard blues-rock...fierce, original, beautiful guitar and an exquisite growl of a voice...powerhouse blues that strikes like a hammer blow.” —Billboard

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

A powerhouse performer, Michael Burks was one of the blues' top live draws, headlining festivals all over the world. His records were equally celebrated, with 2008's Iron Man called "a knockout" by Mojo magazine and "exceptional, exquisite and wicked" in Billboard. Show Of Strength, recorded in early 2012, burns with the white-hot intensity that made Burks one of the greatest bluesmen of his generation. His sudden death in May 2012 robbed the blues world of one of its brightest stars.

Review

''Diamond-hard blues-rock...fierce, original, beautiful guitar and an exquisite growl of a voice...powerhouse blues that strikes like a hammer blow.'' --Billboard

''Burks burns his own signature onto almost everything he touches...he has the ability and the imagination to fuse the best of the old and the new.'' --Living Blues

''Burks' down and dirty guitar screams and wails on every cut. Hard-hitting blues, outrageous tone...blazing, explosive solos. His [music] is full of soul and passion. His vocals possess the rich soulfulness of B.B. and rival his stinging guitar work as his greatest talent.'' --Blues Revue

Another Great Disc, All the songs are powerfully performed & well written, As are all his previous disc's. if you like what you hear on the sound bites, you'll love "ALL his other offerings because he was "Consistant" in his music. If you are at all a fan of Electric Blues Guitar, you should have all MICHAEL BURKS Cd's! The last song on the disc is especially haunting considering it wound up his last album. You'll be missed Mike,,,,RIP!

If you like blues from Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout, Stevie Ray Vaughan and others of the like, then you'll find Michael Burks fits right in with these great blues guitarists. Michael Burks' guitar skills are great, at times he rocks the guitar in the style of Hendrix (Cross Eyed Woman), and at times with the smooth blues in the style of Clapton (Storm Warning). You like guitar blues this is an excellent album to add to your Blues collection.

Show of Strength was my first Michael Burks CD; I have listened to it over and over again. It seems as though he sings straight from his heart on every song. I like the mix of pure instrumental with the vocal, perfectly done.
Hard to pick favorite tracks, but I settled on Little Juke Joint and Valley of Tears. I wish I had the opportunity to have heard him perform live. I am ordering all of his previous CDs and what a shame that there will be no more.

The "Iron Man" saved his Best for Last. There's not much else to say except I'm sad there will be no more new releases from Mr. Burks. Hopefully down the road maybe there will be a live album released. If you ever had the pleasure to see him perform live you know what I'm talking about, he just burns the place to the ground!
R.I.P. Iron Man.

I knew Michael Burks. Anything he played or turned out was from a powerful personal effort from within. He had a band that was equally as passionate accompanying him through his rips, squeezes, and distortions in music. There's nothing so personal or searing as a blues man fully in the groove, exposing his inner feelings or demons, that communicate with one's heart and souls so aptly and competent. He was a quiet, humble man who kept the 'tornado' of inner revelation to himself, and fully exposed his feelings on stage without any braking mechanism. The listener knew exactly what the message was, without much need for words or lyrics, for what Michael Burks played, became a rivet in your own soul and experience.
He was to play a gig in Las Vegas. He suffered a heart attack to get to the gig there. That guy could sure play, and ease the depression in others!!

A great final CD from this man of the blues. I saw him perform a few years ago and waited to get a CD signed. He was obviously tired but was gracious and very nice to all fans. While he was good on disc, he really shined in concert. He was taken too young and will be missed.

Without a doubt, this is the best blues album I've heard in many, many years. I was absolutely floored to read the linear notes on this CD, where it was stated that Mr. Burks had passed away in May of this year 2012! An absolute shock and a tragic loss. I have purchased all 4 of his Alligator CD's and without a doubt, this latest is the absolute BEST!!! His first CD on Alligator isn't too bad either. The man had a gospel voice and his guitar playing ain't too shabby either. If there is one blues CD you should purchase, this is the one!

I was turned on to Michael Burks by a song I heard on NPR a number of years ago. I immediately went out and bought his two CDs that were available at that time. I then had the opportunity to see him twice in concert for his "marathon" performances. Wow, even better in concert! I met him and was as impressed with the man as I was with his talent. I recommended him to all of my friends who like blues or just like great guitar playing. This might not be his best CD, but it is worth every penny. I already had this on order with Amazon when I got the news that he had died of a heart attack in Atlanta. What a huge loss for the blues community. I had just checked his website to see if he was performing close to my hometown any time in the future and was shocked to find that he had died. Buy this CD, buy all of his CDs. They are well worth the cost.
