Years ago I made a fool of myself-I'm still really adept at this-- going into a record shop and asking for the single, "Show And Tell.---------By Lou Rawls.
But if you listen to this album, it is a forgivable mistake. Al Wilson's voice has the same type of grit and the same type of honey, and it is really only when you know both that you can tell the difference
But the title track to Show And Tell was a perfect middle-of-the-road soul single for 1970s AM radio. A little funky, sung with extreme passion, not as brash as James Brown, not as lush as the Spinners or OJs.
Most of this album follows suite, with numbers ranging from vaguely funky to some string coated ballads. There is nothing surprising here, but Wilson's voice is simply amazing, on both the ballads and the uptempo tracks. Show And Tell does not have a bad track on it, and while it is no rock concept album, the album is certainly not just a vehicle for the single.
