Whether serving as a session musician, solo artist, or soundtrack composer, Ry Cooder's chameleon-like fretted instrument virtuosity, songwriting, and choices of material encompass an incredibly eclectic range of North American musical styles, including rock & roll, blues, reggae, Tex-Mex, Hawaiian, Dixieland jazz, country, folk, R&B, gospel, and vaudeville. 5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Americana, Cooder-Style May 1, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Ry Cooder put this incredible band together in the late '70's, combining the soul stylings of vocalists Bobby King and Terry Evans with conjunto king accordianist Flaco Jimenez, and Ry's own amazing slide guitar work. This is a band in the truest sense, traversing American music and bringing fresh, creative interpretations of songs like Woody Guthrie's "Do-Re-Mi", r&b classic "Smack Dab In The Middle", and the Mexican torch standard, "Volver, Volver". This album introduced me to Flaco, and led to a series of trips to furniture stores in Denver's Mexican neighborhoods--the only places you could find his albums,at that time. Leave it to a master musician and musicologist like Ry Cooder to find these talented people, and create something so unique. This is a live album in every way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Live Ry Cooder March 15, 2000
Format:Audio CD
"There is so little live Ry available, it's great to find a live CD from a great era of Ry's work. This CD comes from the era of transition from Chicken Skin Music to Bop Till You Drop, with most from the former (along with similar stylings).

5.0 out of 5 stars thrilling October 15, 2010
Format:Audio CD
This is a superlative live recording of Ry Cooder and his band in fine late 1970s form. This album, in vinyl form, was my first exposure to Ry Cooder when it was first released. I was blown away by the music and from that point on, I was a Ry Cooder fanatic, buying anything he put out. This live set has plenty of great songs and passionate performances by Ry, Bobby King, Flaco Jimenez (THE master of the accordian; such a distinctive sound!) and musicians. Not a weak track on this album. Fun and spirited music from guys who sound like they are having a blast playing before an appreciative audience. This album is so good that I wish it could have been a double disc. Hmmm ... maybe there are enough extra tracks in the vault that would warrant an "expanded" version of this album? Wisful thinking, perhaps, but that would sure be a treat!

4.0 out of 5 stars Actually It Rates 4 and Three Quarters Stars August 19, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
First acquired this recording in the 8-track format. Played it everyday for about a year during my morning ablutions. Not even the limitation of the 8-track could diminish the quality of this man's work, but now I have it on a CD. Oh Happy Day! On this disc, Ry is just too wry and Flaco elevates the accordion to an instrument of expressive mystery and dazzling joy. The band and the singers fully realize Ry's vision for an intimate-sounding live recording.

Even though Ry plays everyone's music sometime, not everyone seems to "get it". Luckily for us, Ry has not seemed to be chasing fame and fortune, rather he is looking to preserve and present music and deliver its messages in the most authentic manner. This is not to imply that Ry is a slave to "authentic" performance; rather he is attempting to authentically engage any who are willing to enter the dialogue that comes from real encounters with musical messages. It does not matter to me, nor does it seem to matter to Ry, the style, genre, era, or culture. So join us in celebrating Ry's choice to present a serving of live musical interaction on a single CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great American Music March 15, 2009
Format:Audio CD
I got this around it's release (30+ years ago) and I still consider this a high point of Ry Cooders recorded work. He is the soulful musicologist: Hawaiian, blues, Texas border, jazz, Cuban, African, Indian (Asia) and more. Here it is folk, Texas border, blues, and gospel. Warm, fun, and sincere.

Seeing only an expensive import (Japan) and not available from U.S. purblisher is disappointing. Maybe time for Amazon to snap up some of the classics and provide a reasonable priced offering?

This is a great collection of some of my favorite Ry Cooder songs played live. "School Is Out" Smack Dab In The Middle". It's a short collection... not very many songs, but the band is all there and it's alot of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy the Show (time) October 22, 2013
It's Ry Cooder so you know you're going to get some quality performances from him and his line-up of top notch musicians. If you don't know Ry, well what can I say. He's like an audio encyclopedia of ethnomusicology always coming up with a mixed bag of music strange and familiar. Whatever he does you can be assured he strives for quality.

This album is a sampling of live cuts from a couple of concerts back in 1976. The songs are an eclectic mix of blues, gospel, rock, and even a couple of Mexican styles. It's showtime for sure when Cooder and his Chicken Skin Revue takes the stage on this album. They even make the so-so songs sound superb.

The recording is extraordinarily clean for a live album. You'll hear some audience sounds before or after songs and sprinkled throughout, but the music mostly sounds like it could have come direct from the studio.

For a lesson in the music of America, Cooder's giving a lesson you'll be sure to enjoy. Open up your mind and ears for a show you're probably gonna love.
