3.0 out of 5 stars I Don't Get It....?????
I was a HUGE Slave fan (just ask my family), one to the biggest ever. While I thought "Showtime" was a pretty good album, and admittedly some "nice" songs, there is NO WAY I thought that album was better than "The Concept", or even "Hardness of the World"...not to a TRUE funk fan. It was more of a pop/Top 40 sound (not an endorsement, for my money) than real funk...

Slave has indeed come to blow ya mind! I guess I can speak for us old school folks when I ask, "What took sooo looong for the "Show Time" album to make it on CD? Now I can safely put away both of my sratched up vinyl records and listen to "Show Time/Visions Of The Lite" in CD quality sound! How sweet is that! I would've been satisfied with just "Show Time" on CD but adding "Visions Of The Lite" to it was a real added bonus. How much better can it get, you say? How about the fact that "Hardness Of The World/Concept is finally on CD, as well! You really have to love old school to undertand the significance of this! Thanks Collectable Records, for finally

doing something that Rhino records didn't do!

Slave had a very unique sound to them. There first three albums (Slave, Hardness Of The World, & Concept) incorporated a hard rock edge to their very raw funk sound. Even though Steve Arrington was added to the band on the Concept album, it was not until the next album "Just A Touch Of Love" that Steve had brought their sound to a whole new level, which was just a taste of what was to come. The next two albums "Stone Jam" and "Show Time" really brought Steve Arrington to the forefront as he smoothed out and polished up their raw funk sound and brought it to a whole new dimension, if you know what I mean. In my opinion, "Show Time" is by far the best album they put out with "Stone Jam" coming a close second. The next album "Visions of The Lite" was good,as well, but it didn't quite match the quality of their previous two albums. I guess it may of had something to do with the fact that Steve Arrington had a very unique sound to him and that he left the band after the "Show Time" album and went solo, what a shame. Anyhow, 'Visions Of The Lite" does sound sweeter in CD quality especially the jams with the monster bass solos. And the next album "Bad Enuff, was respectable, but they went downhill after that. To all you hardcore funkateers, this CD is a must! They don't make music like this no more. It's all about the sampling now! No originality!

When I was 13,I remember a Slave album from late 1981 called "Showtime" was out.On it was the unedited version of Wait For Me,Party Lites,Snapshot,Steal Your Heart,Smokin' and Funkentown. In short, the album was the bomb.It was just re-released on October 25,2005 as a twofer CD.Damn,I'm glad someone finally got around to issuing this classic of a funk masterpiece on a CD.

A lot of different people will have different Slave album picks. For some " "Stone Jam" is it.For others it's "The Concept".Mine is "Show Time".I think Mark Adams trademark bass stylings and Steve Arrington's vocals made this one for the DJ crates and home stereos.

THIS IS TRUE OLD SCHOOL FUNK AT IT'S PUREST

5.0 out of 5 stars Well its about time d_mn!!, May 20, 2006
This review is from: Show Time / Visions of Life (Audio CD)
I have been waiting for this album to be released on Cd for several years. I have the vinyl that I went out and found (in mint condition to) and copied to a disc. ButI always hoped that someone would have the good since to put it out on disc. Well that time has come, and I could not be happier. This is definately slave's best album. Steve Arrington's vocals are simply fantastic and Mark adams is a monster on funk bass, if you like funk then this is a must have. This is the album that influenced a zillion funk bassist back in the day. The songs here are basically the songs that made the band famous, this is the ohio band at its best.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE INVADE(STEVE ARRINGTON) WAS DA BOMB, February 1, 2006
This review is from: Show Time / Visions of Life (Audio CD)
His riffs were amazing and so passionately funky. But Drac and Mark Adams were awesome too! The stars were aligned just right when these cats got 2gether! Too bad ARRINGTON left the group to sing "dance gospel". I just saw Slave at Blues Alley on 1-30-06 but non of the original members were there except Mark Adams. And he funked the place up!!! The funkiest bass player of all times! Said he'll be starting a new label or band soon. Let's keep the funk alive!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's SHOWTIME !!!!!!!, April 24, 2006
This review is from: Show Time / Visions of Life (Audio CD)
I've always said that this band my not have been the best but they were and still are my favorite. Slave reminds me of the garage bands that we had here in Savannah, Ga when I was just a shorty. I saw them in concert about 2 months ago and the sound was still strong. Granted...the only two original members that were there was Mr. Mark Adams (the MR. is there from one bass player to another....excuse me....from one bass player to the best bass player ever - Nothing but RESPECT !!!!!) and Drac.

Believe me....it was SHOWTIME. It's about time someone realized that this album was ready for release on cd. Snapshot, Party Lites, Wait For Me are exceptional. But one of the greatest (and probably most slept on) old school slow jams is included in this set..."FOR THE LOVE OF YOU". Steve Arrington's distinct vocals over that vintage Slave funk....TIMELESS. I'm a DJ and I still incorporate it in my slow jam sets. "Vision of the Lite" is good and if this double set is the only way to get "SHOWTIME"...you better do what you gotta do. If you're a fan of the funk (THE REAL FUNK)...better grab this one...I did. I have 4 copies of the vinyl and I'll keep them too.

P.S. Isn't it about time to release "JUST A TOUCH OF LOVE" on cd? Somebody hook me up !

5.0 out of 5 stars It's about time 4 "SHOWTIME!", June 20, 2006
This review is from: Show Time / Visions of Life (Audio CD)
What can I say? this is one of the greatest funk albums of all time.I had this album on vinyl and dubbed to cd(the quality was ok).Now I have the masterpiece remastered on crystal clear CD!!!My only complaint is that I wish there was liner notes included,I wanted read about how this groovefest of an album came together! Visions of the lite was wasn't a bad album but without Steve Arrington(get his solo album, highly underrated)there was just something missing(Mark and Steve were one of the best rhythym sections in funk, and when you take away part of the puzzle it's very hard 2 replace).Mark Adams was also featured in Bass Player's magazine for "R&B/Funk Legends"(I'm sure you can get a copy from them if you enquire)so it was nice 2 see him be recognized for his contribution & talent. I think it's time to release "Just a Touch of Love" and "Bad Enuff"(maybe they'll give us the double album again).Showtime should be in your collection if your a "True Funk Fan" and if you don't have it...your fakin it!! Peace to OHIO, Funk Capital of the World.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Was Supposed To Be A Christmas Present For Myself,But The FUNK BUG BIT ME!, December 6, 2006
This review is from: Show Time / Visions of Life (Audio CD)
so i opened it already(naughy me, i know.tsk tsk...lol!)...i had visions of the lite on vinyl awhile back and now to hear it on c.d....WHOA....the Immortal Bass playing of Mark Adams is truly captured on this whole album.man i tell ya, slave really brought the funk and tore yo door down wit it. TWO CLASSIC FUNK ALBUMS ON ONE C.D.it sounds like slave didn't need to rehearse or anything...just went to the studio, instruments and all, told the engineer to press "record" and this is what we get.i would give this set 10 stars if i could....TRULY AWESOME.

5.0 out of 5 stars Showtime!, October 10, 2006
By
This review is from: Show Time / Visions of Life (Audio CD)
I give it five stars for "Showtime" alone, since these are the full album versions and the Greatest Hits cd's out there don't include all the Showtime tracks in full length. This is absolutely a classic album.

I was waiting for this re-release. THANK YOU!!!
