Biography

Redd Kross rank among the Iron Chefs of Rock ‘N Roll; able to take any secret ingredient, master it, and make it their own. Their reputation for originality, rich flavor and stunning presentation has been praised by such peers as Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), Stone Temple Pilots, The Mayor of Sunset Strip - Rodney Bingenheimer, and yes even Joe Elliot of Def Leppard.

Editorial Reviews

Redd Kross's epitaph will one day read, "In the wrong place at the wrong time." Though they've achieved much critical acclaim (as well as some occasional, well-deserved criticism for stinkers like Third Eye) and were almost huge stars, their timing and luck have been impeccably awful. What could have been their first breakthrough in the mid-'80s, the brilliant Neurotica, was marred by distribution problems from their failing label, Big Time. Their jump to Atlantic was equally disastrous with the release of the horrendous Third Eye. The band finally put out one of its greatest records, Phaseshifter, on Mercury, and absolutely no one noticed--except for Stone Temple Pilots, who shamelessly aped Redd Kross in their hit "Big Bang Baby." Unfortunately, Show World will probably not improve the band's fate. While it is a decent followup to Phaseshifter, it lacks that album's grit and soaring Beatles-esque harmonies. It is a pleasantly solid record of Cheap Trick-like pop--hard yet sweet--but most of the songs tread well-worn territory, and many of the hooks have become a little rote. Though Redd Kross have certainly achieved a lot in their more-than-15 years together, with Show World they may have just run out of gas. With their luck they'll probably make their best album ever two years after electronica rules the music industry. --Adem Tepedelen

5.0 out of 5 stars *Show World* Redd Kross!, June 4, 2003
This review is from: Show World (Audio CD)
Simply put, this is one of those great lost treasures, a true classic in Rock And Roll. This rocks from start to finish, and every song is a gem. What we get on "Show World" are catchy pop songs with hooks a-plenty, gorgeous, lofty melodies, rip roarin' riffs, killer drumming from Brian Reitzel, and more off beat, heart-felt, witty lyrics from Jeff(who sings lead, he's a great rock singer, truly a lost art these days) and Steve McDonald, who plays bass. Favorite tracks are "One Chord Progression", "You Lied Again" "Follow The Leader", "Ugly Town" and the killer opening number, (a Quick/Dickies cover)"Pretty Please Me". Also, this album features some of the best rock guitar playing ever, from the late, great Eddie Kurdziel, who passed away in 1999. Eddie's playing was a crucial element to the band's sound, for sure. "Show World" is a cd I can put on at any time, in any mood, and still be amazed at how brilliant it is. Redd Kross is a great band, and this is their masterpiece.
Cheers! <Mike Acquisto

5.0 out of 5 stars Redd Kross - Show World, April 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Show World (Audio CD)
People laugh when I tell them that "Show World", by LA's finest Redd Kross, is the greatest album of all time. This is for several reasons: the album is too recent, it's not by Radiohead, and that it is too "lightweight" or "bubblegum" to be a serious contender for such a status. Bubblegum it may be, but never before has an album been available that is truly deserving of full marks like this album is. "Show World" plays like a greatest hits collection to rival even "Abba Gold" in terms of truly uplifting, passionate music pop music. It may seem an absurd statement to be accepted the average ignorant sceptic, but this truly is THE ultimate pop LP. Potential Criticism 1:- track one is a cover version - how unoriginal. Response:- Pretty Please Me simply contains the best chorus written by a human being, regardless of who performs it. Potential criticism 2:- On "Show World", Jeff McDonald has become a shameless Lennon copyist. Response:- JEFF McDONALD IS MORE TALENTED THAN JOHN LENNON, RAY DAVIES & PAUL McCARTNEY PUT TOGETHER BY GENETIC SCIENTISTS. There really isn't that much else left to say, except that there really is no excuse for not at least wanting to own this fantastic LP. It really is the greatest album of all time.

No, I'm not a member of the band....just a fan of good music. Red Kross, probably one of the most overlooked bands ever kicks it with this album. The album starts off with "Pretty Please Me" from the seminal punk band the Dickies the most overlooked punk band ever (if you don't know their music look them up now!), and this tune rocks!!! A fantastic cover. "Stoned" is probably the strongest tune on the album, great power pop with fantastic riffs. Brit pop influences are perfected in "You Lied Again", which plays off of The Beatles. The songs "One Chord Progression" and "Ugly Town" also stand out as fabulous tunes. Buy this one!!!
