First off, this Showcase volume collects the "real" Jonah Hex stories from when he appeared in Weird Western Tales and then went on to his own comic book before DC "killed" the character in the 80's and sent him to the future and later brought him back and had him fight ghouls and vampires. It has since been re-vived in the 00's, but the artwork and stories are quite lame, though they've tried to bring back the flavor of the old, original Hex stories from the 70's (but are much tamer, oddly enough).

Jonah Hex was created by cartoonist John Albano, who besides his funny cartoons moonlighted as a comic book writer as well (sort of like Sergio Aragones did too) and was drawn by Filippino artist Tony de Zuniga, at the time among the first Filippino comic book artists to come to America and try his luck there (later followed by many other Filippino artists; DC lovingly accepting their work as they were paid a measly 3 dollars per page drawn).

This second volume of Showcase Presents ends with the run of the Weird Western Tales stories where Hex appeared and begins the new Jonah Hex comics with a blast by getting José Luis García López (JLGL for short) to draw the character. At the time JLGL was known for updating Superman's look, but in all frankness, I never saw García López as a superhero artist. JLGL was more at home drawing westerns and his art for Jonah Hex is simply the best work he ever did. DC weren't blind to this man's skills, and though Hex was a cult classic, it never became a great seller, so DC decided to have their best artist at the time draw the character.

I want volume 3 and not in nine or ten years. Glad this finally saw the light of day. It was originally solicited back in 2005 or 2006, I hope whatever legal hurdles had to cleared were good for the creators because I really do like this book.

Even though I like the current crop of Hex tales DC is putting out these days, they do not hold a candle to the original artwork and story telling.....wish I had been a fan and collected the originals back in my college days.....If I had a complaint it would be the lack of color in this collection of re-prints, but you get what you pay for....well worth the purchase price for any fan of Jonah Hex!!!!

I've read tons of western comics and graphic novels. While there are a few the rise to the top of the pile (Joe Kubert's take on Tex, Moebius' Blueberry, Salina's Cisco Kid), this volume of DC's Jonah Hex includes my very favorite. Fleisher is at the top of his game with the start of the Hex series and Garcia-Lopez's work is beautifully powerful and unsurpassed in the genre. This nearly 500 page volume looks better in it's black and white, than the original colored comics and is the best bargain out there at a $19.99 cover price!!

Gritty and well written. I took a chance on these and they are far better than many super-hero tales from this era. A different kind of character more like a Tarzan or other pulp hero.
