Great war comics from a bygone era,

The first thing that stood out for me in this volume is how short the stories were. 6 or 7 page tales. These are the classic Sgt.Rock tales of epic battles in World War 2. If you miss the days of comics with clear cut good guys and bad guys, you'll love this volume. Excellent art and good writing make for a fun time for the reader. You can't go wrong for the price when you get over 500 pages of The Rock.

Return with us now to those thrilling days of ...............,

I can only echo the previous accolades for this massive collection of Sgt. Rock and Easy Company. The buyer, however, needs to be aware that this volume's contents are printed in black and white. But like photography, this showcases the detail instead of hiding it with color. Hope we don't have to wait too long for Volume 2.

This is a very welcome collection of hundreds of pages of Sgt. Rock. Any fan should have this collection. Hopefully, Showcase will come out with volume 2, etc. as well as the missing volume on The Losers

When no one else stands...The Rock stands!,
This review is from: Showcase Presents: Sgt. Rock, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Although I'm a huge Kubert fan, I was always dubious about Sgt.Rock, assuming him to be just a Nick Fury - take on a Nazi machine gun nest armed with just a bobby pin type, but I was pleasantly surprised here.
Sure, there's a few cliches, and the background characters are mostly nondescript, but considering when these stories were written, they hold up really well. ( Just see the Jimmy Olsen Showcase for how dumb most of DC's output was at this time! ) Sgt. Rock really is just about the grunts in war, the shmoes who win through by tenacity and luck rather than superhuman courage. And considering the times, Rock is a pretty well developed and likeable character. Concerned for his men, brave but not ridiculously so, he's just a working stiff trying to make it through the war alive. ( I particularly like the way he has of saying " Must be some other guy doin' this... Not me " everytime he takes on a tank singlehanded! ) Yes, after 500 pages, Rock telling yet another green recruit a story to keep him calm does tend to wear a bit thin, and the phrase ' combat happy joes of easy' is used way too much, but bear in mind, these tales were originally printed on a monthly basis. The best way to read these books probably is in spots and spurts. Still, Rock is a great character, and the art is, of course, superb. C'mon...And Fight!

I remember reading 'SGT Rock' when I was a kid. I would collect 6 Coke bottles for 2 cent each deposit, and buy me a SGT Rock comic. Kids today don't know what they are missing. If it's not electronic, they're not interested.

I give this Showcase volume about as high a recommendation as possible. Joe Kubert's art is outstanding and way ahead of its time. The stories are consistently fun and often thought-provoking. Any fan of the comics medium should own this collection!

When i was a kid I read all of the DC war books: The Haunted Tank, The Unknown Soldier, The Losers, and Our Army At War, featuring Sgt Rock and Easy Company. Beautiful artwork and great stories. Every Saturday I would go to the drugstore. IT had three spinner racks of comics. I would buy a whole stack of books and sit in a booth reading them while drinking a coke from the fountain. This book brings back all of those great memories. I can't wait to get my hands on Volume 2. DC needs to release all of the USS Stevens stories in a volume.
I would reccommend this book to anyone interested in DC War Comics.

What a surprise -- the greatest comic book of all time is a war comic featuring a regular guy doing exactly what's expected of him. Month after month, year after year, Kanigher and Kubert wrote and drew real stories about real people in scary situations. This is the truth, played out in grand style in a theater of life and death. Swamped by superheroes, the Rock of Easy strode on and he has basically survived them all. How strange -- here in the 21st century, my teenage sons say this -- and Legion of Super-heroes -- are the greatest comics they've ever read. Great art stands the test of time. Grab this one!

Showcase Presents: Sgt Rock Vol. 1,
This review is from: Showcase Presents: Sgt. Rock, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I have stopped in many out of the way bookstores and comic stands looking in vain for comics of my past over the years. I remember being a kid and running with my allowance money every month to buy the newest Sgt Rock and G.I. Combat. I wasnt into Spiderman or Batman or any of those leotard wearing phonies. To me Sgt Rock was THE man, someone who at least "could" have been real, unlike Bruce Wayne. So when I found these books available, I went nuts and went on an ordering frenzy! Even a couple I remember reading only once or twice like Enemy Ace and The Unknown Soldier. All my old comics have been lost over the years,as many of you can probably say the same. And as corny as this sounds, it was most likely Rock and the GI Combat crew that inspired me to learn about WWII history and eventually join the military. At least in a small way. I KNOW the writting is corny, and repetative, and maybe even, dare I say, dumbed down? But reading these comics again brings me back to my younger days, and gives me an escape for a little while. It is worth a read if you are new to it, and you MUST have it if you were a fan of The Rock. Thanks.
