2.0 out of 5 stars Black & white reprints of classic four-color comics...?
I honestly don't get the appeal of these books. Why bother making (or reading) black & white reprints of classic four-color comics...? I mean, yeah, the stories are still great and the original comics are hard to find, but a huge part of what made these comics great was the eye-popping artwork, including the bright primary colors: reading them in dull B&W is just plain...

DC ISSUED A RECALL/REPLACEMENT PLAN FOR FLAWED COPIES OF " SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY VOL. 2 TP (NOV070244), several pages from SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE #2 were accidentally swapped.

DC Comics will provide retailers with new, corrected copies of this title in quantities equal to their orders to date on the current printing. Retailers will not be billed for these new copies. DC asks retailers to please dispose of any copies of SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY VOL 2 TP they currently have on their shelves, and to accept returned copies from their customers in exchange for corrected copies.

The SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY VOL 2 TP new printing is scheduled to arrive in stores on April 2. To differentiate it from the original printing, the logo on this cover will be red and white instead of red and yellow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superman Family Fun!, June 14, 2009
This review is from: Showcase Presents: Superman Family, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
I continue to find the Superman collections the most enjoyable of all DC's Showcase Presents volumes and Superman Family Vol. 2 is no exception! 500+ pages of fun and simple 8-10 page stories. Classic Superman art by Curt Swan, Wayne Boring and Kurt Schaffenberger is featured in just about every story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Silver Age, Notorious, May 20, 2008

This review is from: Showcase Presents: Superman Family, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
The stories collected in the Superman Family volumes in DC's Showcase Presents project are perhaps the least accessible for new readers looking into the Silver Age of comic books. This is because these are the stories that contain most of the truly notorious narrative contrivances of the era, spawned by the increasing difficulty of coming up with story lines that not only involve Superman but actually star, alternately, his "best pal" Jimmy Olsen and his "girlfriend" Lois Lane, not two of the brightest scriveners in journalism - at least not as they're depicted here.

Even so, I think that for anyone seriously interested in the most significant facets of the Silver Age, these volumes are required reading. They are prime examples of what comic book storytelling had been reduced to by the heavy hand of censorship as imposed by the Comics Code Authority. (The CCA had institutionalized the attitude in the American general public that comic books were strictly for kids, an attitude that has not vanished by any means.)

2.0 out of 5 stars Black & white reprints of classic four-color comics...?, April 10, 2008
This review is from: Showcase Presents: Superman Family, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
I honestly don't get the appeal of these books. Why bother making (or reading) black & white reprints of classic four-color comics...? I mean, yeah, the stories are still great and the original comics are hard to find, but a huge part of what made these comics great was the eye-popping artwork, including the bright primary colors: reading them in dull B&W is just plain wrong. Sure, the printing costs are lower, so you can get more pages for your money, but it's more pages of boring, not more pages of fun. It's really a travesty.

On the other hand, it recently occurred to me that these could be used as coloring books... Maybe you could buy a box of crayons to go along with all the artwork that the publishers ruined in this format. (Axton)
