I was pleasantly surprised by this book. While the plots have holes beg enough to fly the Titans helicopter through, the camaraderie between the Titans and the sense humor they display make this very enjoyable. I also appreciate that they have to use their brains (or rather, Robin's brains) as much as their powers to save the day. Some of the villains are a bit lame, and while much of the dialogue is dated, it adds to the charm and nostalgia value. This is also less campy than it could have been, considering it's a Batman related book which came out during the Adam West TV show's run (though I love the fact that their secret hideout is hidden behind a billboard advertising the Batman TV show!) This was written back in the days when stories were one issue long, which is a refreshing change, though sometimes things seem a bit rushed. Another pleasing thing about this comic is that, unless many of DC's other Silver Age teams (Justice League and Legion of Super-Heroes, I'm looking at you) the heroes here actually have reasonably distinct characters. With some of those other teams, you could switch the word balloons around to different characters and no one would be the wiser. But here, Robin is the leader and relatively serious one, Kid Flash is the somewhat cocky goof off, Wonder Chick is a cool but boy crazy hero with a god sense of humor, and Aqualad is the relatively quiet one, a fish out of water, if you will. Overall, anyone wanting to catch up on Titans history (even if it's been rebooted multiple times) or who wants to read stories which don't involve dismemberments and the dark gritty stuff that pervades modern comics should give this a try. Also, over 500 pages for such a low price? That deal can't be beat, even though I was really dying for color by the end of this.

This review is from: Showcase Presents: Teen Titans, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
