You'll Wonder How You Ever Lived Without This 2-CD Set,
By A Customer
This review is from: Showdown (Audio CD)
If you're not familiar with the Nomads you are quite fortunate because you have yet to discover one of the best bands of all time, and you'll find it to be a gratifying discovery indeed. I would describe these guys (they're from Sweden but all their vocals are in English and they emanate a very cosmopolitan vibe) as a rather swaggering foursome that absolutely jams fundamental bar-room/fraternity-style hard rock. This isn't heavy metal; it exhibits maybe just a molecule of punk, but overall the sound is dead- center rock'n'roll-- and yet I'd be hard pressed to name a band on a similar wave length. Social Distortion would be a possible point of comparison, but the Nomads are, with all due respect to SD, much, much better. Really. This 2-CD compilation is essentially a best-of. All but one or two songs are absolutely great. This is not mellow stuff at all--but even your Grandma wouldn't label it noise; in fact, she'd throw down her cane, slam a few shots of Jack Daniels and then start to air-guitar in front of your entirely astonished family. The Nomads may not be particularly famous, but I understand they have a good cult following. You'll listen to this set one time through and then I predict you'll proudly consider yourself a member of that cult.

This is the 1994 2-disc comp that went out of print for a bit, but Sweden's White Jazz label reissued it in 2000. The first disc is a Greatest Hits of sorts, featuring 20 tracks from 1981 to 1993. The 2nd disc is 22 tracks of rare stuff, live stuff, and oddities. In case you aren't good at math, that would be FORTY-TWO tracks of rock'n'roll greatness that will NOT be denied. They also have a new one coming out within the next month, so they will be celebrating 20 years of being the rockin'est bunch of Swedes in the history of mankind. And as if the music wasn't enough to entice you, the liner notes have background on EVERY SINGLE SONG in the set, which provides a great quality glimpse of the band's past. C'mon, they went on to be the influence of a million bands (the Mono Men and the Hellacopters spring to mind immediately) and have never stopped bringing home the rock. They are the epitome of ROCK AND ROLL. So pick this up before it goes out of print again and you are left to wonder about the greatness that is/was/will always be... The Nomads.

60's garage done 70's style,

The Nomads were a group with obvious 60's garage rock roots who played with a more 70's Stooges/NY Dolls kind of sound. On their best songs they're every bit as good as the Cramps or the Dolls (or better), but they did some pretty humdrum and plodding stuff as well. "The way you touch my hand" is one of the great power-pop/rock 'n' roll songs of all time, and should be in your collection. Other early numbers like "Where the wolfbane blooms" and "Real gone lover" are a gas, too. Before buying this collection, I'd only had an old l.p. copy of their first American album "Outburst," and I found some of the later material on this collection somewhat disappointing. The second disc in this set, which is all rarities, made it up for me -- lots of excitement there. It should be noted that a good number of the songs on here are covers, mostly 60's garage groups like the Sonics and Third Bardo, but also some 70's groups like Blue Oyster Cult and Hawkwind, even. Anyone cool enough to cover both "Motorhead" and "I'm five years ahead of my time" is alright by me!
