From the flyleaf. Darby Buckingham was an Easterner, a bear of a man who made his living writing Western novels, and who had earned his nickname, "The Derby Man," from the out-of-place hat with which he refused to part. But now he found himself involved in the thick of a real-life Western plot--with himself as the main character. Darby had volunteered himself as acting sheriff of Running Springs--his physical strength was almost unbeatable--although he still was an Easterner when it came to guns. Suddenly a problem arose for which a man's brawn was not the answer: his town was being deliberately and viciously destroyed by the rival town of Snakegrass Junction. It was up to Darby alone to save Running Springs, no matter what the price--and the price could be mighty high for an outsider who couldn't shoot even in self-defense.
