Book Description

March 2007
Rock Bannon is a man bred to the Colt and the rugged law of frontier survival.  But to a group of naïve homesteaders, his reputation as a gunfighter marks him as an outcast among decent folk.  So when a smooth-talking scoundrel comes to camp, no one is ready to listen to Bannon's warning.  He alone knows that Mort Harper's route leads to certain massacre.  Now it is up to Bannon to protect the greenhorn settlers--especially the beautiful Sharon Crockett--and convince them of the truth about Harper before it is too late.  For even if the wagon train survives the hostile Indians and desert ahead, it is bound for Bishop's Valley and a vicious land war--a war that will force Bannon to oppose the innocent settlers.

Louis L'Amour introduces his fans to one of his favorite--and lesser known--characters from his vintage "magazine novels." Now the story of Rock Bannon comes to life again in this exciting program.  Featuring a performance by Richard Crenna, this program is three full hours of authentic frontier adventure.

More About the Author

"I think of myself in the oral tradition--as a troubadour, a village tale-teller, the man in the shadows of a campfire. That's the way I'd like to be remembered--as a storyteller. A good storyteller."

It is doubtful that any author could be as at home in the world re-created in his novels as Louis Dearborn L'Amour. Not only could he physically fill the boots of the rugged characters he wrote about, but he literally "walked the land my characters walk." His personal experiences as well as his lifelong devotion to historical research combined to give Mr. L'Amour the unique knowledge and understanding of people, events, and the challenge of the American frontier that became the hallmarks of his popularity.

Of French-Irish descent, Mr. L'Amour could trace his own in North America back to the early 1600s and follow their steady progression westward, "always on the frontier." As a boy growing up in Jamestown, North Dakota, he absorbed all he could about his family's frontier heritage, including the story of his great-grandfather who was scalped by Sioux warriors.

Spurred by an eager curiosity and desire to broaden his horizons, Mr. L'Amour left home at the age of fifteen and enjoyed a wide variety of jobs, including seaman, lumberjack, elephant handler, skinner of dead cattle, and miner, and was an officer in the transportation corps during World War II. During his "yondering" days he also circled the world on a freighter, sailed a dhow on the Red Sea, was shipwrecked in the West Indies and stranded in the Mojave Desert. He won fifty-one of fifty-nine fights as a professional boxer and worked as a journalist and lecturer. He was a voracious reader and collector of rare books. His personal library contained 17,000 volumes.

Mr. L'Amour "wanted to write almost from the time I could talk." After developing a widespread following for his many frontiers and adventure stories written for fiction magazines, Mr. L'Amour published his first full length novel, Hondo, in the United States in 1953. Every one of his more than 120 books is in print; there are more than 300 million copies of his books in print worldwide, making him one of the bestselling authors in modern literary history. His books have been translated into twenty languages, and more than forty-five of his novels and stories have been made into feature films and television movies.

The recipient of many great honor and awards, in 1983 Mr. L'Amour became the first novelist to ever to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by the United States Congress in honor of his life's work. In 1984 he was also awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Reagan.

Louis L'Amour died on June 10, 1988. His wife, Kathy, and their two children, Beau and Angelique, carry the L'Amour publishing tradition forward with new books written by the author during his lifetime to be published by Bantam.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOUIS L'AMOUR'S EARLY PULP FICTION REPUBLISHED, January 22, 2009
By
This review is from: Showdown Trail (Mass Market Paperback)

I have read Louis L'Amour novels for several decades, having most of his novels in the matching Bantam hardcover editions from the 1980s, nearly 110 books. Yet I am glad to see these reprints from Leisure Books as they allow us to read the original stories as they appeared in the pulp magazines. Many of those early stories were later reworked by L'Amour, and I doubt he would be happy to see these appear as they do. However that may be, his edict of the 1980s that only Bantam should publish his work was based on sound contractual business practice, wanting any sales to come through Bantam. But since I surmise these short stories of the pulp years to be in the public domain there is little that Louis or anyone can do to stop their reappearance. Though I admire Louis L'Amour's writing alot, for me he was not the best to ever write a western. Men such as Ernest Haycox, Ray Hogan, Frank O'Rourke, Luke Short, and several others are his equal or better. But no one ever outsold L'Amour, nor will anyone ever in my opinion do so.

Plus, and this is no small thing for western writers, he helped raise the selling price of westerns to be equal with other best selling books. When I started reading westerns in the 1950s and 60s, the cost of a western was normally a third to a half of say a novel by James A. Michener. If Michener was selling for .95 then westerns would be at .35 to .60. As anyone knows who buys westerns today, and that is mainly what I read, the cost per book is now closer to $6.00 or $7.00. This can be directly traced back and attributed to Louis, where his westerns once sold for .75 or .95 cents, those SAME novels are now going for close to $5.00, with these Leisure reprints hovering around $7.00. One of his lasting legacies which all western writers should appreciate, he actively helped push the selling price of all westerns upward to make them the equal of paperbacks in general. As the cost of Louis L'Amour westerns continued to escalate so too did all other western paperbacks. With the latest price for these Leisure reprints being in the $7.00 range.

Now, 20 years after his death, it is becoming less easy to find Louis' books. The WalMart in my area has only had 2 copies from Bantam Books in the last 3 years, and for me they are not as plentiful in the 2nd hand book stores either. So when I see these short stories reprinted by Leisure Books I know that Louis L'Amour's work will be given at least a short time longer before the reading public. His work is well worth preserving, and with the passing of an older generation (such as myself) he may become as Zane Grey or others who are no longer readily available at the local newsstand nor read very much if at all.

This book from March, 2007, only reprints a couple of his stories but it does seem as if Leisure Books will continue publishing his pulp stories, as there are now at least 5 separate books out with more to follow I am sure. The two stories within this book are The Trail To Peach Meadow Canon and Showdown Trail. With Showdown Trail later being reworked into the novel The Tall Stranger.

Some purists may resent what Leisure Books is doing, but I do not. I am happy to see L'Amour's work on any book rack, anywhere, anytime, and 20 years after his death do not really care who does the publishing to put it there. It's the publishing that is crucial to keep Louis L'Amour books before the reading public.
