5.0 out of 5 stars Really works.
I've used this for a year now. Really works. The key to replacement is noticing when you have to turn the faucet handles more and more to get the same flow, then the filter is clogged. If you wait, it will separate itself from back pressure.

I've been using the aquasana shower system for years now (3 or 4, I think). They work - hair and skin are definitely less dry. I've stuck with them because my family is inhaling less chlorine fumes which is probably a healthy choice. One problem is that a recent filter cartridge turned out to be defective. Aquasana's customer service gave me a "run-around" - we have no record of your purchase, contact the distributor, some of our distributors issue refunds.... Fortunately, amazon.com took back the defective cartridge that had only lasted 6 weeks and gave me a full refund. In the course of my correspondence with Aquasana I learned that they do not replace defective cartridges - they pro-rate the refund for the defective filter over six months from the purchase date. Yikes, don't stock up on these! If you don't use it right away, you could be stuck. On a positive note, I've bought probably 10 of these filters and this is the first one that clogged.

Update:

I've switched from Aquasana to Vitashower (which isn't as well-constructed, but that's another review). The Aquasana 4125 filter does not remove chloramines, which many municipalities now use instead of chlorine for disinfection. If you want to remove the chloramines, you have to purchase the AQ-4125C. According to Aquasana's sales rep, the 4125C can be ordered over the phone for $54.40 and lasts about 6 months because there's no bacterial inhibitor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best move I made!, May 14, 2007

I have really hard water, and this made such a difference. My hair gets way less frizzy -- skin is less dried out (I have dry skin, this helped) and even the soap goes down the drain faster! Less soap scum! I am buying a refill now - I am a bit late with the review...

At this point I've showered through twenty of these filters without a problem. I once tried to smash one open to examine the inside (an expired one, of course). I used a hammer and gave it several blows. Would you believe that the plastic would not crack? I cannot understand one reviewer saying that this item is poorly made. I am very satisfied with this product which I use to ward off the harmful effects of chlorine.

When installing a new filter: On rare occasions a black rubber "O" ring, three inches in diameter, may detach from the upper housing when unscrewing a used filter. After removing the filter you will find this "O" ring resting on top (of the used filter). Return "O" ring to its groove in the upper housing; install new filter. This may sound a bit complicated when reading, but very simple when doing, I assure you. 5.0 out of 5 stars love it! Actually, love the filter that this item fits!, February 15, 2008
Didn't know if a shower filter was what I needed for my sensitive, itchy winter skin, but wow! What a difference! My hair feels better, too! Feels like it does when I shower at the cabin on the lake with clean water (no clorine, rusty old pipes, ect.) Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars AQUASAUNA WATER FILTER SYSTEM, February 3, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Noticed a change in the feel and smell of the water immediately, this is a great product. Skin is less dry in the winter, hair has less tangles. You get the best pricing here. Worth the money, fairly easy to install.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good shower filter, June 18, 2011

We bought this shower filter about three years ago and I am very satisfied with it. We replace the cartridge every 6 months and find the cost not too exorbitant. We got a filter to handle the heavy chlorine that was being placed in our town water. With this filter, there is no more chlorine smell and my daughter's skin rash stopped, which we believe was caused by the chlorine ( my husband is also sensitive to chlorine.) This filter has done the trick. The cartridge is fairly easy to change and the flow of water is good. I would recommend this filter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, design needs upgrade, February 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Shower Filter Replacement Cartridge For AQ-4125 (Tools & Home Improvement)
We love our Aquasauna, and the seller delivered the filter replacement cartridge quickly. However I would suggest two design upgrades.

1) another washer needs to be made to fit between the screw thread and the shower apparatus. Despite rigorous twisting and attachment, some water continues to leak.

2) Inward grooves near the screw thread about half an inch down would allow easier grip with a vise or ring clamp to facilitate grip during installation and replacement. Most showerheads start to experience some bending when reattaching the shower head replacement filter to achieve requisite tightness and seal.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works Well but Short Life, January 24, 2010

(REAL NAME)
I live in an area with very hard water and old pipes. After a shower here, my fine hair typically feels dry, frizzy and oily, all at the same time no matter what type of shampoo and conditioner I use.

When I first got the Aquasana filter Aquasana AQ-4100 Deluxe Shower Water Filter System with Adjustable Showerhead, it worked great. My hair felt normal again, my soap lathered properly and completely rinsed off. Unfortunately, the filtration effects lessened noticeably within a month and went rapidly downhill from there. I do shower daily but they claim the filter should last six months before needing replacement. I'd say mine lasted two months, max. Given that the replacements are so pricey, it's tough to invest in something that doesn't really last.

Side Note: This product reminds me of the racket the razor companies pull on consumers by charging reasonable prices for the razor itself but ridiculously high prices for replacement blades. Not cool.
