Editorial Reviews

Review

"Author Carrol Krause has chosen a very interesting subject and writes with an especially good eye for 'telling detail' and for imagining sounds, images, and smells of long ago. The illustrations combined with the engaging style will attract an enthusiastic local audience." ―James H. Madison, author (with Will Counts and Scott Russell Sanders) of Bloomington Past and Present

"This once dominant and still prominent building houses the story of a city's past manufacturing prowess, a downtown in decline, and an urban renaissance. The roots of that important story are now available in this written history of Showers." ―Mark Kruzan, Mayor of Bloomington, Indiana

"Krause brings writing talent, local knowledge, and professional familiarity to her narrative.... Ultimately, Showers Brothers Funiture Company serves as a history of Bloomington itself, telling the story of how an industry helped drive the development of one of the Midwest's most vital university towns." ―Bloom

This is history as it should be. This lively and engaging story of one family and one business serves as a revealing window on the economic history of the whole country. Describing the individuals involved makes abstract concepts like the industrial revolution and the economic crash of the 1890's accessible to the lay reader. I would recommend this book to any student of American history or economic history, and to anyone trying to understand the roots of the economic and environmental situation the country faces now. It's also a lively and entertaining story for anyone interested in how people lived 100 years ago. An excellent read!

This excellent book by Carrol Krause tells the story of a furniture company began by a father and his sons which became, in it's day, the largest of it's kind in the world. Not only was Showers Brothers' successful but their success carried over into the community of Bloomington, Indiana in ways which were many years ahead of their time. For me this is a proud story as the founder, C.C. Showers, was on of my 3rd Great Grandfathers. Anyone reading this book will be surprised by how this company grew and prospered along with their workers and their families. Ms. Krause has an easy to read style, thoroughly enjoyable!

I've lived in Bloomington, Indiana for over 30 years but didn't know a lot of the details in this book. The history is interesting as a history of any family owned business of the period, not just for residents of Bloomington.

I've read many histories. Even when the topic is interesting, the book is often not. "Showers Brothers" is what a book should be, not only informative, but a joy to read. I'm interested in Bloomington, Indiana history, but even if I was not this book would have kept my attention and kept me reading until the end. There isn't just history here, but also a story that's as engaging as a novel. This book is a much needed history of Bloomington and the too-little-known Shower's family that set it on its way. This book is a must-read for those interested in Bloomington, Indiana history, furniture production, and women's roles in the 19th century Midwest.
