Book Description

May 2, 2002
Reverend Renita J. Weems draws upon two prayers from the Book of Luke, examining the relationship between Mary and her older cousin to reveal the important effect mentoring has on the lives of women. The story of a young pregnant Virgin Mary visiting her older pregnant cousin Elizabeth, told in Luke 1:39-56, is one of the most profound examples in the Bible of an empowered mentoring relationship between women. Drawing upon the Hail Mary and The Magnificat 9rayers, SHOWING MARY retells this touching story, revealing how both mentor and protg use their respective gifts and energies to support ach other. This relationship is then applied to modern life, emphasizing the importance of women mentoring women, nurturing each others dreams, sharing wisdom and experiences, and building networks of mutually rewarding friendships between older and younger women.

3.0 out of 5 stars Powerful metaphor of pregnancy, May 6, 2002
This review is from: Showing Mary: How Women Can Share Prayers, Wisdom, and the Blessings of God (Hardcover)
The author does a wonderful job comparing and contrasting spiritual pregnancy against real pregnancy. An immediate "To Be Read" book for women of color who desire a closer walk with the Holy Spirit and are undergoing change in their life. Keep this book on your shelf for reference and meditation.

4.0 out of 5 stars To the "Mary" (and "Elizabeth") In You...., April 24, 2003
By
This review is from: Showing Mary: How Women Can Share Prayers, Wisdom, and the Blessings of God (Hardcover)
Rev. Weems has written wonderfully, and expressed simply, the impact women have on the lives of other women. At any given moment, we may be either "Mary" or "Elizabeth." I found my chapter(s) and rejoiced with each page that God had brought women (elders and lil' sisters) into my life to teach me and be taught by me. I recommend "Showing Mary" to every woman--regardless of your ethnicity, denomination or generation; but ESPECIALLY those who may have thought you "missed the boat," or were "sailing alone." Thank you, Renita, and thank you "Elizabeth" for sharing this treasure with me. With much love...."Mary"
