Showplace: Reviving the Splendor, a Restoration Chronicle [Paperback]

Daniel M. Costigan (Author)

Available from these sellers.

Book Description

January 1, 1993
Showplace is a restoration chronicle detailing the love and labor of the people who saved the vaudeville theatre and silent film house known as the Old Rahway Theatre in Rahway, NJ and how they reopened it as the breathtakingly restored performing arts house known today as the Union County Arts Center. With over 300 pictures, Showplace allows us to relive the transformation of an enduring vestige of a forgotten era into the beacon for arts and cultural performances that the theatre has become today. A visual delight detailing the details of the restoration and renovation of a piece of history, the story of the Union County Arts Center is also filled with the love the people of Rahway had for their hometown theatre and its Mighty Wurlitzer organ and their determination to not let the tradition die. All proceeds from the sale of this book directly directly benefit the Union County Arts Center and support their continued programming.

About the Author

Dan Costigan, as a co-founder of Rahway Landmarks (now Union County Arts Center, Inc), handled publicity for the fledgling organization and occasionally hosted its Board meetings in the office of his Edison home. In 1984, he intensively researched the history of the Rahway Theatre and published the results in Encore for a Worthy Performer, sales of which helped raise funds for the preservation effort.

Paul Szabocsik recalls, as a lad, bicycling into town to watch the Rahway Theatre being built. He subsequently became a regular patron of its show and was eventually able to help preserve it as a local landmark. Paul had joined the preservation effort as early as the 1960s when attention was focused mainly on the theatre’s antique Wurlitzer pipe organ. He and others helped to get the instrument playing again and it became the hinge pin for the boarder restoration effort that was to follow.
