DISC ONE - Showtime USA, Vol. 1 - Everybody's Dancin' / Varieties on Parade - The happiest and peppiest rhythm and riot time of your life! - Directors Will Jason and Ron Ormond

"Everybody's Dancin'" (1950, 65 min)
Dance hall owner Dick Lane, in desperate need of "name" attractions, is helped by country music legends who agree to star in a TV special at his emporium. Appearances by Spade Cooley, the Sons of the Pioneers (including Ken Curtis and Shug Fisher), outstanding vaudeville specialties and guest stars Roddy McDowall, Jimmy Ellison, Russell Hayden, etc., are the real draw.--- Also featured: Richard Lane, Hal Derwin, Barbara Woodell, Sid Melton, Roddy McDowall.

"Varieties on Parade" (1951, 57 min)
It's vaudeville on film as the camera passes a box office and ticket taker, proceeds to a front-row seat, and watches as master of ceremonies. Jackie Coogan comes out on stage to introduce singers, dancers, acrobats, jugglers, cyclists--even a skit spoofing the silent film "The Kid" which made Coogan a famous child star! --- Featuring Jackie Coogan, Eddie Garr M.C., Tom Neal, Eddie Dean, Iris Adrian and Lyle Talbot.

DISC TWO - Showtime USA, Vol. 2 - Yes Sir, Mr. Bones! / Square Dance Jubilee - Get the Low Down on the Hoe Down! - Drectors Ron Ormond and Paul Landres

"Yes Sir, Mr. Bones!" (1951, 54 min)
A young boy wanders into a home for old minstrel men and wants to know more about them, cueing the oldsters to tell HIM (and the Lords of Flashback to show US) a performance from the days of riverboat shows. Songs (including "Is Your Rent Paid Up in Heaven?"), buck-and-wing and soft-shoe are all part of the nostalgic fun --- Featured is Cotton & Chick Watts, Ches Davis, F.E. Miller, Billy Green and the Hobnobbers. Square Dance Jubilee: Don Barry, Spade Cooley, Mary Beth Hughes, Wally Vernon, Max Terhune and John Eldredge

"Square Dance Jubilee" (1949, 80 min)
New York television talent scouts (Don "Red" Barry and Wally Vernon) head west to look for musical talent for Spade Cooley's TV show and find plenty--and even help round up some cattle rustlers! With a whopping 25 songs, this one "stacks up as a strong entry in western music market...crackerjack exploitation potential"

DISC THREE - Showtime USA, Vol. 3 - Hollywood Varieties / Holiday Rhythm - On with the Show! - Directors Paul Landres and Jack Scholl

"Hollywood Varieties" (1950, 60 min)
The advent of television brings back vaudeville, as emceed by Robert Alda (who also sings "Be There My Love"). Acts like the Hoosier Hot Shots, Sandy and His Seals, Hector and His Pals, The Four Dandies and Twirl, Whirl and a Girl resurrect that great entertainment medium of the past.

"Holiday Rhythm" (1950, 61 min)
It's the top-tappin' fun-time of a lifetime when singer-dancer David Street bumps his head and dreams that he's on a trip around the world, and seeing great variety acts at each port. A Dixieland band, a mambo orchestra, a "Rhythm on Ice" show and even comedians Sid Melton, Peter Marshall and Tommy Noonan are among the dream world talent --- Featuring Robert Alda and the Hoosier Hot Spots, Glen Vernon, Edward Ryan, Peggy Stewart. Holiday Rhythm: Mary Beth Hughes, Tex Ritter and the Cass Country Boys, David Street, Wally Vernon and Jerry Scoggins.

"Kentucky Jubilee" (1951, 72 min)
A wild potpourri of hillbilly singers, dancers and specialty acts (including the Y-Knot Twirlers!); strung together by a crazy plot that involves a pop-eyed emcee (funnyman Jerry Colonna), a reporter (James Ellison), an actress (Jean Porter), a kidnapped movie director (Fritz Feld), a blackmailer and even an attempted bank robbery.--- Featuring Jerry Colonna, Jean Porter, James Ellison, Fritz Feld and Raymond Hatton.

"The Kid From Gower Gulch" (1949, 68 min)

It took me a while to actually "buy" this because it wasn't clear what these movies are. When I finally did and watched them I was a little disappointed that most of the music was lip-synched and there was hardly any steel guitar playing which I was looking forward to. All in all these are
primarily fun and silly Vaudeville revival acts strung together with a thin "back-stage" plot. My favorite was the Spade Cooley one with Richard Lane.

I grew up hearing my grandmother tell me the stories about how she and my grandfather rasied Spade Cooley and taught him classical violin. He was a residential student at the Chemawa Indian School in Salem Oregon around 1925 when he was placed into their home by the courts. My grandfather taught music at both Oregon State University and Willamette University. He was known as Professor Thomas and also privately taught classical violin. My grandmother was a piano teacher. Clyde Cooley moved in with them when he was eight years old and stayed until he left for California and started his career. I have never met him but do have boxes full of family photos, news article and letters I have had all my life. To finally see him and his band was a real treat. It is kind of corney, but a lot of fun. The Sons of the Pioneers are great and featured Ken Curtis when he was part to that group. (Think Festus on Gunsmoke). There was very little of Spade Cooley doing any solo work on this which was disappointing. It was fun to see this "movie" which I think was really part of his old TV show on KTLA at the Santa Monica Ballroom in the early 1950s. I wish there were video recordings of that old TV show, I'd love to see them. For a real good time I recommend this fun group of DVDs. I only wish it showed Spade performing his famous "Shame Shame on You" his trademark song. I am sending this entire collection out to my brothers so they too can see "Uncle Clyde" in all his glory!
