4.0 out of 5 stars Change is Gonna Come, September 27, 2004
By
This review is from: Showtime (Audio CD)
This is what I call the "playing devil's advocate" review.

The UK garage scene is dramatically different to the North American hip hop scene. Yes, the two are similar in that they boast MCs and sampled beats and whatnot, but let me assure you that Dizzee Rascal is like nothing you have ever heard or seen in your life.

First of all, the UK garage scene started out as a movement, not a genre. It began with guys like Wiley and Mike Skinner (The Streets) acting as guerilla DJs hijacking radio waves and playing their own music to get exposure. It was completely illegal, yet it became so popular that these DJs (and MCs) became underground gods. The whole scene blew up and it is now probably the biggest thing to hit the UK music scene since the Spice Girls. Now it's crossing the pond. We all know The Streets, and Eskimo and Wiley and them lot will be emerging soon enough right next to our boy Dizzee at an American CD store near you.

In my opinion, the difference between garage and hip hop is that garage involves a greater emotional investment. Now don't get all huffy on me, hip hop heads, I know there is a great deal of passion invested in hip hop too, but you have to look at the garage scene as if you were looking at hip hop twenty years ago. Back in the 80s hip hop was a movement, just as garage is now. With the commercialization of the garage scene it will probably lose its soul, just as hip hop has done over the years (and don't even try to argue that point with me). For the mean time though it is pure, raw energy oozing out of the speakers and into your virgin ears, just like how hip hop did back when you first listened to EMPD or Boogie Down Productions.

Why am I writing all this? Because people are going to hate on this stuff if they don't bear in mind that the garage scene is like nothing else, just as hip hop was twenty years ago. The mainstream hated hip hop and dismissed it as a fad, yet now in 2004 it rules the airwaves. As recent as the early 90s hip hop was seen as overly subversive, aggressive and hyper-political; today, the UK garage scene is being similarly labelled.

To be honest with you I haven't warmed up to the garage scene yet, let alone Dizzee. I happen to find the production over-simplified and unpleasant. That's just my particular taste though. I do, however, appreciate that this is a movement that is pushing the genre limitations of the mainstream music that has controlled the industry for almost ten years now. I don't have a problem with that - I happen to love a lot of mainstream music - but it's nice to have a change once in a while. I don't know where or how the garage scene is going to evolve but I assure you that it is totally different from what you are used to in your earphones and, like it or hate it, it is truly a beautiful thing to see a subversive underground movement acheiving success in a perpetually close-minded industry, just as hip hop had done way back when.

5.0 out of 5 stars UnKnown star, December 26, 2004
This review is from: Showtime (Audio CD)
It is rare that an artist can put out two albums in such a short span and still show evidence of growth, but this cat did it easily. Many complained that Boy in the Corner's bleeps and beeps made it less accessible to the average american audience but they will find little to complain about with this album. Showtime isn't a blatant grab for stateside appeal, but Dizzee succeeds in culling together a more tuneful collection of tracks while still adhereing to his "Garage" roots. "Stand Up Tall" and "Learn" are two standout tracks and even the annoying "Girls" grows on you after a few listens. If you liked the first album you will crap your shorts when you get this one. OY!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Grime will grow on you!, September 26, 2005
This review is from: Showtime (Audio CD)
If you were coming here looking for a rap album turn around right now unless you have an open mind when it comes to music. Dizzee makes what they call Grime music over their across the pond. It is an interesting amalgam of rap, garage, & house. Lyrically Dizzee is a trip. He has a lot to say and the fact that he can flow to these beats is really impressive. His accent adds that extra touch to his songs that make them sound good. He addresses a lot of topics ranging from partying to growing up in the hood's in London (the LD as he calls it). While he is rapping, his beats are like nothing you have heard over here, unless you are a major techno fan. They definitely have the electronic edge to them. While I enjoy the sounds I find it hard to listen to at times because they are so sporadic and jumpy. There are the mellow tracks which are a nice break but overall this album is a straight up party from start to finish so if you are wanted to just chill throw something else on, but if you want to get wild then let Dizzee Rascal pump out of your speakers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rapid-fire but very accurate machine gun delivery!!!!, October 1, 2004
This review is from: Showtime (Audio CD)
Rascal's beats are original but sometimes sparse. But it's his lyrical talent and delivery shines through here. Lyrically as good as "boy in da corner" although his talent seems less astonishing this time around. There are some standout songs such as "Stand Up Tall" and "Graftin". Mainly its daring and innovative. Rascal will one day take his place among the rapid-fire legends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bring That "Grime" Music To The U.S., September 30, 2004
This review is from: Showtime (Audio CD)
Second time around, Dizzee Rascal's new album "Showtime" is much more exclusive than his first. He is a different rapper than what we hear in the states, trust me. I can't help but get heavy into the beats (it's bananas~in a good way). He is to the point, having nothing to hide, and nothing to be phony about. Coming from the South side of London, Dizzee is street. "Dream" is one track that you can sit back and laugh to, because you'd never suspect an artist to put that type of music as the background and with his lyrics, he makes the track "hot". I've always been a fan of garage music and trip-hop but he is one that is making me love it much more. Overall this CD will make him much more popular in the states. If you check out Vibe, Source, Blender, and Source, they all give Dizzee Rascals great reviews. Definetely worth owning!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Showtime is a good album, March 30, 2005
This review is from: Showtime (Audio CD)
Showtime is a good uk grime album. Many people who do not understand the UK grime scene need to be educated about it before they say that its just Hip-Hop that is sped up, because it is not the case. As you listen to the album you can see that Dizzie's talent increases and that his music is nowhere near hip-hop. However if you are not used to listening to this music or you are narrow minded then this album is not for you. If u are willing to to listen to it with an open mind, then you will abe able to appriciate the talent that Dizzie has and the sound of something that is truly BRITISH. Dizzie is the trend setter for bringing UK grime overseas and his album justifys why he has a cross over appeal to the americans and the British. However there are many Grime artists that will be following in the footsteps of Dizzie. Artists such as KANO will be making it big! In conclusion Grime is British music, for too long the Brits have been trying to do what the americans do e.g. hip-hop, but now its time 4 da U.S. to stand up and take notice of the Grime scene! All of da UK STAND UP TALL!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A new type of Hip hop, January 7, 2006
This review is from: Showtime (Audio CD)
If you get this album thinking your going to hear rap somewhat like Slick Rick's then you are very far from it. Dizzee is bringing to us american hip hop heads Grime and I'm all for it. The Grime production is sick and very creative something new that will give you a break from the bubblegum rap that's being released over here right now. These aren't your average beats and if your wondering yes this is somethin that will knock in your sytem. To really get use to Dizzee It's probably a good idea to get his first album Boy in da corner or go on ebay and get the stuff you can't get on Amazon. For a lot of people it will take time before you get every word of what Dizzee says due to his accent but when you finally understand you will begin to respect his lyrical talent and his potential to be a great lyricist. Not everyone is going to be able to get with Grime and if you can't then something is wrong because this is some of the hottest production I've heard this year. Straight play threw album and I can't wait till his next release.

This is a revew for people in the U.S. (or anywhere else) who are new to grime or who have the album and want to get their hands on some similer stuff.
Grime is a music that stemed from garage, a combanation of dancehall, drum n bass, hip-hop and bashment but it has it's own feel. It's a very underground scene that relies mostly on raves, pirate radio and white label releases.
If you liked this album or "Boy in da corner" then you should check out the following classic garage and grime tracks and albums: (you will have to download most of the individual tracks listed)

5.0 out of 5 stars He Does It Again!!!Amazing!!!, August 25, 2005
By
Bryan (Pittsburgh, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Showtime (Audio CD)
After listening to it several times through on a car ride, I can honostly say that this is one of the best rap albums I have ever listened to. Grime is soon becoming my favorite style. His lyrics actually mean something too. They aren't just the "typical" lyrics about sex, women, and money with no real meaning behind them. All his songs seem to have some sort of meaning to them too. "Stand Up Tall" is probably my favorite song from him from both albums.

I can't wait til he comes out with another album. He seems to be sticking to his roots, so I can expect another great album coming.
