More About the Author

Kathy Herman is no stranger to the Christian publishing industry. Before becoming a bestselling author and award-winning poet, Kathy worked on staff at the Christian Booksellers Association for five years. She gained eleven years of bookstore experience as a children's products specialist and drew on that expertise to conduct related seminars in the U.S. and Canada.

Kathy quickly rose to the rank of bestselling author when her first novel, TESTED BY FIRE, became a CBA bestseller shortly after its release. Since then, eight more of her novels have claimed the title of bestseller: ALL THINGS HIDDEN, THE REAL ENEMY, THE LAST WORD, THE RIGHT CALL,FALSE PRETENSES,DANGEROUS MERCY, RELENTLESS PURSUIT and NOT BY SIGHT.

Her contemporary, fast-paced novels weave inspirational messages into the storyline so effectively that a college professor in Houston utilized her books as required reading to educate students on the value of teaching through fiction. Kathy's books have also been widely used in book club discussion and Bible study groups.

Kathy and her husband Paul live in East Texas and have three grown children, five "nearly perfect" grandchildren, and an adorable cat named Samantha. Her hobbies include photography and bird watching--especially an ongoing fascination with hummingbirds.

Former newspaper editor, Ellen Jones and her husband Guy, a lawyer, have moved into their new home Seaport, Florida. Ellen works on a novel while Guy commutes to Tallahassee to practice law.

At a supermarket Ellen meets two other newcomers depressed and lonely Julie Hamilton and her two years old daughter Sarah Beth. Not long afterward, Ellen is at a diner when she overhears a conversation that accuses Julie's husband Ross of child abuse. Out of fear for the child and the mother Ellen reports what she heard to police chief, who says he will make inquiries. Not feeling that is enough, Ellen investigates Ross. She soon realizes her initial opinion and that of others that he was an abuser seems wrong although he is someone with a shady deadly past as a newspaper article claims he killed two boys, ran over his own son, and is the prime suspect in the disappearance of two missing girls. Ellen fears she waited too long too speak out as Sarah Beth has vanished.

The story line grips readers who will worry that Sarah Beth perhaps has been killed by parental abuse, which overshadows the return of the Baxter series stars Ellen and Guy in the first Seaport saga tale. The story line serves as a reminder not to jump to conclusions especially based on gossip and rumors (mindful of Harriet the Spy). Though the moral message is overly pounded with unnecessary cul de sac sidebars, fans of the Baxter tales will enjoy the relocation of the stars.

Whomever is writing for Ms. Herman's back covers is not doing her novels justice, especially this one. I got into this series late because I just never could get into the idea of this book. But I loved the Baxter series and the Phantom Hollow and I wanted to fill in the blank. The descriptions of her books, never do the books themselves justice in my opinion, but here is a great story about a young family who just moved to Seaport. You begin with just flashes of their story and slowly Herman reveals more and more of their secrets. The ending is somewhat unbelievable, but that doesn't bother me. The journey of the whole book is incredible and the characters may be even stronger in this series than in the Baxter series as there are fewer to focus on. This is a great introduction to a great series.

Truly a page turner, Kathy Herman's fictional book A Shred of Evidence does not disappoint readers as she carefully tells the story of the explosion of gossip in small town Seaport. Throughout the novel, Herman continues to develop her characters with many complexities and reveals more and more of their hearts, motives, and how seemingly small conversations can have big, lasting impact. I could not put this down and I read it over the course of two days (a rarity for me). One of the strongest points of this book is that it does not merely entertain, but it gets you to really think about the consequences of gossip and how faith in God can really change things for the better. Stating that gossip is harmful is one thing, but showing what it can do through down-to-earth characters in a gripping story is quite another. This would be a great book to read with a group to discuss. I highly recommend this novel to anyone wanting an enjoyable read who doesn't mind learning some valuable lessons along the way.

I just loved this book! Not only did it keep me up late reading but at the end it really gave me some things to think about in my own Christian walk. Kathy Herman is one of my all time favorite authors and she never lets me down. This book is a perfect example of her ability to take you into the characters lives and help you see the things in your own that may need addressing. You won't be disappointed!!

Former newspaper editor Ellen Jones feels like the new girl in town until she meets young Julie
Hamilton and her daughter Sarah Beth who have only lived in the small town of
Seaport for a month. Ellen senses that Julie is hiding behind her troubles and
a deep depression. When she overhears some disturbing news about Julie's
husband at a local restaurant, Ellen's journalistic instincts send her on a
search for the truth about this young, troubled family. The trauma eventually engulfs the entire
community, and it's difficult to distinguish the real crime: abusing a child or
abusing words.

I couldn't put this book down! Lack of sleep was so worth the amazing story and important lesson in this book. Kathy Herman has a brilliant way of putting the teachings of Jesus into lives of characters that draw you in! Thank you Kathy for being the vessel I needed! It seems timely that a woman who works for me has come to me with gossip about a family I know this week. I quickly changed this subject but now know God wants me to be a vessel for her. I pray I do that half as well as Kathy!
