Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

It's a pleasant surprise when a Hollywood sequel actually rivals the artistic success of its inspiration, but that's exactly what Dreamworks' second computer animated skewering of the classic fairy tale canon does with consistent wit and charm. It boasts a vibrant song-score (Harry Gregson-Williams' slyly humorous orchestral soundtrack is also available) to match, one that bristles with even more eclectic pop energy than the original, if not quite as many left-field surprises. There are takes on love with a contemporary edge from Eels and Dashboard Confessional, as well as more traditional romantic ballads from Joseph Arthur and Counting Crows, while veterans Tom Waits and Nick Cave offer up slices of their own typically moody melancholia. Covers of Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out For A Hero" (in a dry techno revamp by Frou Frou) and Bowie's "Changes" (with a cameo by the author himself lighting up an otherwise mundane version) are also featured, though neither reaches the loopy orbit of Antonio Banderas and Eddie Murphy trashing Ricky Martin's kitsch-iconic "La Vida Loca." --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!, May 29, 2004
By Marcy Gomez (Kansas City, USA) - See all my reviews
We got this CD even before we saw the movie "Shrek 2." My kids - ages 3 and 6 - love this soundtrack and we listen to it constantly in the car. Their favorite tracks are "Livin La Vida Loca" and "Holding Out For A Hero." I personally enjoy "Accidentally In Love," "Funkytown" (which brings back memories of when I was a kid myself) and the other upbeat songs.

This is a must have for those who enjoyed the movie. And unlike the first film's soundtrack, it is appropriate for all age groups and can be enjoyed by everyone in the family. Donkey and Puss In Boots rousing duet is a definite crowd pleaser. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Something to sing to..., June 1, 2004
By "gistranch" (West Haven, UT United States) - See all my reviews
I saw the movie a few days ago, and bought the soundtrack immediately afterwards. All the songs from the movie are on the CD including a bar song "sung" by Captian Hook and a playful verison of Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out for a Hero". As with the first CD, the song Donkey(Eddie Murphy) sings at the end is included, this time accompanied by Antonio Banderas(Puss in Boots) Livin' La Vida Loca! A great cd all together and lots of fun to bounce the car with and have neighbor cars looking at you like your insane. ^-^

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for all!, May 6, 2004
By Crystal Ray (Rockford, IL USA) - See all my reviews
The Shrek 2 soundtrack is just as good as the sound track from the first movie. There are great songs for the whole family. Mom loves it for the songs that I remember from my younger days and my kids will like it for the humor and the fun quirky songs that are included as well. This is a great soundtrack for carting the kids around town or for roadtrips. I am sure that this is going to be the one my kids request the most in the future!

3.0 out of 5 stars Shrek 2 not as good as Shrek original
I loved the music in original Shrek and thought Shrek 2 would be the same. I ordered the Shrek 2 CD before seeing the movie and was disappointed.
