5.0 out of 5 stars good mix of fun
Wow, surprising lack of reviews here, so I feel obligated to up the rating. Great soundtracks have at least one standout track that not only reminds you of the movie, but can also sell itself on its own right (e.g. "My Heart Will Go On" that made people buy the otherwise-instrumental Titanic soundtrack). 3.0 out of 5 stars Let's Hope This Brings a Nice Paycheck To....
Hats off to whoever selected these tracks and managed to slip in tunes by true artists such as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Tom Waits, the Eels, and Steve Shelley (via Pete Yorn's cover of "Ever Fallen in Love"). May they receive nice royalty checks into the forseeable future to continue their own great work.

5.0 out of 5 stars good mix of fun, August 6, 2004
This review is from: Shrek 2 (with bonus magnet) (Audio CD)
Wow, surprising lack of reviews here, so I feel obligated to up the rating. Great soundtracks have at least one standout track that not only reminds you of the movie, but can also sell itself on its own right (e.g. "My Heart Will Go On" that made people buy the otherwise-instrumental Titanic soundtrack). The song that sold me here is "Accidentally in Love". I heard this on the radio and was surprised to see it here (it had been a while since I saw the movie), and to find out that Counting Crows sang it (didn't seem to be their style). Thanks to that great track, the soundtrack starts off the energy level high. Things subsequently get chilled down and mixed up. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of artists some of which I wouldn't usually associate in a fun/pop-ish context (e.g. the emo Dashboard Confessional). A few of the slower tracks that I thought were skip tracks (Richard Price, Joseph Arthur) are actually growing on me now. One improvement I would make is to do some reordering of the tracks. For example, the catchy Pete Yorn song would be a nicer fit in the higher-energy beginning. It may even rival the Crows track for standout spot if it weren't so darn repetitive! The album ends with a great rendition of the hip-shaking Ricky Martin song. Thank God the Eddie Murphy / Banderas combo doesn't grate on the ears like William Hung.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than the Original., May 26, 2004

This album has a nice mix of songs. Like the original SHREK soundtrack, the different styles and types of music seem kind of bizarre, but once a person sees the movie, everything makes sense. The first track, "Accidently in Love" will probably end up being one of the most popular songs this summer--I enjoyed it even though I really don't like Counting Crows. My favorite songs on the album are:"Holding Out for a Hero" (by Frou Frou)"As Lovers Go (Ron Fair Remix)""Fairy Godmother Song""Livin' La Vida Loca""Holding Out for a Hero" (by Jennifer Saunders)What I especially liked about this album is that it includes all three songs sung by characters in the movie. The combination of character versions of tunes along with all the other music makes this a soundtrack better than the original.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding soundtrack from an outstanding film, November 25, 2004

Shrek 2 is one of those rare sequels that rivals the original. Not only is the graphic quality more sophisticated than in the first Shrek, but the cast is stronger. This same improvement is reflected in the film's soundtrack. I want to site two specific contributors. The first is Antonio Banderas as Puss In Boots, who is enormously funny and wonderful in his duet with Eddy Murphy singing " Livin' La Vida Loca ". But the biggest treat ( as well as a major surprise ) is the fantastic singing voice of Jennifer Saunders of Ab Fab fame. Her rendition of " Holding Out For A Hero " is nothing short of spectacular. I guess being a brilliant writer and comic actor isn't enough for her.

This is music that the whole family will enjoy. For us older folks, there is the enjoyable blast from the past, " Funky Town ", the sophistication of Tom Waits' " Little Drop of Poison " as well as great songs by the Counting Crows , the Eels and other contemporary favorites. Buy it. You won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this soundtrack, May 13, 2004

This review is from: Shrek 2 (with bonus magnet) (Audio CD)
Shrek 2 is a fun soundtrack. This CD has a good variety of songs that are all enjoyable to listen to. I love the track Accidently In Love by the Counting Crows. It is a great playful song, and it is one of their best in a long time. I also enjoyed the duet by Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas Livin La Vida Loca. It is a very funny version of the Ricky Martin hit. I think their voices sound pretty good together too. Butterfly Boucher does a great job singing the David Bowie classic Changes. Her version sounds more upbeat than the original to be honest. Little Drop of Poison is a good song to do tango dance to. Funkytown is a good classic dance song and a nice addition to this soundtrack. I love Jennifer Saunder's voice. Her delivery on the song Holding Out for a Hero is so great. People Aint No good by Nick Cave is a pleasant song to listen to. His deep voice sounds sexy. Shrek 2 has a great variety of songs on it. I enjoyed it very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Energizing!, November 12, 2004

This review is from: Shrek 2 (with bonus magnet) (Audio CD)
Until I got the DVD last week, I had only seen Shrek2 on an airplane where I could barely make out the dialog, never mind the music. But as soon as I saw the DVD, I knew I had to get the CD. The music is energizing and exciting. More than anything, my rave goes to the so-called "bonus track," the arrangement of "Holding Out for a Hero" used in the movie with Jennifer Saunders singing. This is such a heart-pounding rendition that I've started playing it repeatedly as an anthem in the mornings to get me going for the day. And I agree, who knew that Eddie Monsoon from AbFab had such a terrific voice!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool collection Shrek or no Shrek, July 5, 2004
This review is from: Shrek 2 (with bonus magnet) (Audio CD)
I have to say that I liked this collection very much. It's not enough to top the first Shrek soundtrack though, that one's better. However, the cd has some of the most important songs used in the movie and the collection's diverse enough to be enjoyed whether you're a fan of the big green ogre or not. I liked Shrek well enough but am not crazy about him. The cd however plays regularly on my car. I especially like some of the older songs on it ("Accidentally in Love" is cute and cool but dangerously close to being overplayed) but enjoy it all. It's actually one of the few cd's that I can play in its entirety without skipping over any songs. If you liked the movie, you'll like these songs reminding you of your favorite parts of it but even my boyfriend who hates all thigns Shrek liked it too so that made me believe this really is for everyone.
So just give it a little try, borrow it first if you're not too sure, I think anyone can like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hail The Great Green Ogre, June 18, 2004
This review is from: Shrek 2 (with bonus magnet) (Audio CD)
"Shrek 2" is a wonderful movie. I enjoyed it even more than the first "Shrek" film, as classic as the first film is. And the "Shrek 2" movie soundtrack is a great, solid batch of tunes, with a mixture of original songs and older songs that were borrowed for the film. Among the original material, I especially enjoy the exuberance of Counting Crows' "Accidentally In Love," and the quiet, peaceful pop of the Eels' "I Need Some Sleep." Of the borrowed songs, there's the funky all-time classic by Lipps Inc., "Funkytown," and the melancholic piano bar pieces by Tom Waits and Nick Cave, "Little Drop Of Poison" and "People Ain't No Good." David Bowie's "Changes" gets a fine treatment by singer Butterfly Boucher (with Bowie himself on guest vocals), and there's two excellent covers of the old Bonnie Tyler hit, "Holding Out For A Hero"---a killer, revamped dance version by Frou Frou, and a more faithful but no less powerful version sung by the voice of the Fairy Godmother, "Ab Fab"'s Jennifer Saunders (who knew Saunders had such a great singing voice?). And, of course, this CD also includes the fiesta fun of Puss 'N' Boots & Donkey (Antonio Banderas & Eddie Murphy) on "Livin' La Vida Loca." A great soundrack album for a great movie, the "Shrek 2" soundtrack rocks. Go, Shrek!

Ok, I'm not big on reviews but I feel one is needed to convey the glory that is "Accidentally in Love"

This song has potential to be the best song of the summer. Its catchy, well written, musically tight, and just plain fun. The rest of this CD only serves as a backdrop to this track. I suggest everyone pick up a copy of this right now, this song is not to be missed for any reason.
