Absolutely charming,

This review is from: Shrewbettina's Birthday (Hardcover)
My sister and I both fell in love with all of John Goodall's little books as children. This, as well as most of his others, feature beautiful Victorian illusrations (though not at all fussy) of animals getting into mischief and interesting situations. The best part of these is that every other page is cut in half, so when you flip it over it forms a new illustration (hard to describe, but the effect is wonderful). Also these books are wordless, so my three-year old as well as his eight-year old cousin both enjoy these. This book tends to be a bit more feminine, as is Naughty Nancy. For boys and girls both I highly recommend the Creepy Castle, or any of the Paddy books (all by this author).

An excellent book for making up a story.,

I had this book as a child and it was my absolute favorite. The illustrations are beautiful, and because there are no words, the parent can make up a story. Later, the child can start making up his own version. I think it's great for building a child's imagination

One of my children's favorite books growing up. With half pages to move the story along and no words, children can make up their own story. Goodall's illustrations are delicious and the cake looks real enough to eat. To my 8 children, this is a treasure and it encoourages creativity in making up dialogue. Delightful!!!

Aways a Shrewbettina fan!,
This review is from: Shrewbettina's Birthday (Hardcover)
I LOVED this book as a kid. My sister did too. When I found out it had been reproduced, I was ecstatic. I bought 5 copies and have distributed them to both my nephew and my daughter, as well as 3 friends who had babies at about the same time my sister and I did. I never knew that Mr. Goodall had done other books until I stumbled upon Paddy Pork at a book sale. Since then, I have been eagerly acquiring all the others. Great books to encourage creativity.

Charming and imaginative,
This review is from: Shrewbettina's Birthday (Hardcover)
This little book (about 4"X6") is a favorite of both my son and daughter (age 3). Every time we read it, the story is different, because there are only illustrations and the narrative is whatever we want it to be. My children now like to tell me the story, which is quite enjoyable (and humorous too.)
The illustrations are just lovely-- no party was so lovely as Shrewbettina's birthday. The cakes, tarts, dancing and merriment are enthralling. Highly recommended.

We received this book as a gift. My entering-first-grade daughter absolutely ADORES this Shrewbettina. The illustrations are charming and allow her to read it by herself--over and over again. It's our new favorite. I'm looking for more books with Goodall's clever full page/half page illustrations to add to our shelves now.
