4.0 out of 5 stars My kind of comedy horror spoof
While watching the Showtime free preview weekend, I caught a glimpse of the Scary Movie trailer. It looked liked a funny parody, so I rented it. Big mistake. If I had known about the extreme use of gross-out humor before hand, I wouldn't have touched it with a ten-foot-pole. As it was, I ended up being sorely disappointed and disgusted by the movie. 4.0 out of 5 stars My kind of comedy horror spoof, July 25, 2001
There was very little in the movie that I found funny.

Yesterday, I found myself looking at the box for Shriek at a nearby Hastings. Fears of it being just like Scary Movie almost kept me from renting it. Fortunately, I didn't listen to those fears but, instead listened to my inner desire to locate a funny horror movie parody. After watching just 10 minutes, I knew that I was in for a treat.

Sidenote: A common misconception among viewers seems to be that Shriek ripped-off Scary Movie. The truth is, Shriek was produced before Scary Movie was.

Warning ***** Might contain some SPOILERS.******

This movie is silly slapstick in the vein of Spaceballs and Airplane. It spoofs so many different movies, including: Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Shining (TV mini - There is a scene that seems to parody one from the Shining book and the TV mini-series between Horace Derwent and the guy in the wolf mask. As well as, the common "redrum" and topiary.), American Pie, Christine, Grease, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, etc. Not to mention some non-movie spoofs, in fact, two of my favorite moments were the Mentos parody and the Pop Up Video.

A delightful treat for those who enjoy silly slapstick. If you enjoyed Airplane and Spaceballs, you might want to give this one a look see. Personally, I give it a grade of 4 out 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Scary Movie's" biting satire without the raunchiness, February 10, 2002
I first saw it on the USA Network and thought it was slapstick hilarious, especially the multiple reenactments of the infamous "I Know What You Did Last Summer" car-impact sequence. Not only does it slam slasher flicks, but also hammers WB teen soap operas as well as genre parody; for example, "Scary Movie's" not-gay-but-promoting-the-stereotypes-anyway character Ray gets spoofed in the form of the character Martina, who also spoofs Jamie Kennedy in "Scream" by laying down the law on the mechanics of a genre parody movie. Another bit of hilarity is the background inserts of the Killer ducking in and out of the crowd randomly murdering people and nobody notices. While it does have some bad sex jokes, mostly revolving around the "American Pie" reject (...) ("It's pronounced 'Bonner,' sir." "Not from where I'm sitting!"), they're significantly cleaner than anything found in "Scary Movie."

This film pioneered the spoofing of horror movies before the "Scary Movie" franchise took over with a bigger budget and better writing.

Admittedly, this film is not as good at creating a parody of the horror film genre, but I'm not entirely sure it was trying to. It is very entertaining in it's own way, but it obviously has a smaller budget and less-than-perfect writers (I'm redundant, I know).

On the plus side, this film does make fun of a lot of things that the "Scary Movie" franchise left out, which is awesome for us fans of this style of comedy. It obviously has a different approach and film style than the more popularly known "Scary Movies". One of my favorite scenes is towards the end when they do a "pop-up video" parody on the big chase scene which inevitabley happens at the end of every horror movie. I used to love Pop-up video in the 90's, and it was so awesome to see it again!

All in all, it's a fun film for fans of scary movies, but not quite as well-made as the "Scary Movie" movies.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly bad, May 17, 2001
I cannot believe that anybody could find this funny. Just throwing in a reference to every movie ever made isn't funny, you actually have to do something with it. They have even managed to make Tom Arnold unfunny(not easy). I am not a snob and I love stupid films such as TOP SECRET, NAKED GUN, THEY CALL ME BRUCE and the film that this couldn't even hope to get close to, STUDENT BODIES. If you want a spoof of horror films see that, not this(don't even think about it).

PS, the guy who plays the part of Dawson is possibly the worst actor I have ever seen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor and watch it before considering it as bad., January 8, 2011
The movie was stupid and just funny overall. I recommend it to watch if you have nothing else to do or truly bored. It's a good movie : ) Give it a try, before considering other negative feedbacks left from other people. I liked the cast for the movie : )

4.0 out of 5 stars Better then Scary Movie, September 25, 2009

I actually liked this better then Scary movie and then found out it actually was in production first too and got kinda screwed when Scary Movie came out first. This parody reminds me more of the original horror parody Student Bodies from the early 80's then the more raunchy Scary Movie did. These types of movie always have people that love or hate them so I am not surprised by the vastly different reviews on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made before Scary Movie, July 15, 2005

Moonsorrow (Brisbane, Qld, Aus) - See all my reviews
This movie was made BEFORE Scary Movie, so everybody who claims it's just a rip-off of that doesn't know what they're talking about. Scary Movie just happened to get released first.

It's a great movie worth watching. There are heaps & heaps of jokes all the way through and it is quite original.

If you're a fan of parodies, then this is definately worth a go.

*MADE BEFORE SCARY MOVIE*

5.0 out of 5 stars Great comedy, January 12, 2003

Some people irk me, if you knew your movies you would relize you are wrong. Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th was made before Scary Movie, So that would mean Scary Movie was a knockoff of Shriek. Shreiks cast and storyline was 10 times better that Scary Movie and just because it was a low budjet film doesnt mean it isn't good. It was acually 400000000000000000000000000000000000000 times better that scary movie, the jokes were hilarous not stupid. But then again most people writing these reveiws are 50 anyway, so how would u know what teenagers like?

4.0 out of 5 stars SHRIEK ! This is a great movie !!, March 9, 2002
By A Customer
Since the blockbuster-hit: "Scary Movie", perhaps MORE of these parodies were necessary ! "Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday The 13th" is twice as better at the comedy than "Scary Movie" .

I am quite surprised that this one never made it to the theatres or the box-office like those other spoofs ! But it must've been rated good by the fans I'm sure . This film has the type of humor that I like, and is MORE fun than the slapsticked-antics of "Scary Movie" !!

The shower scene was SO funny, and the chase parts were outrageous ! Want a good spoof thats a bit lighter at the disgusting humor ? Check this one out !!

1.0 out of 5 stars Makes me yawn....., September 25, 2005
A Kid's Review
who can enjoy a movie like this, at first i was tired when i watched it, a few months later one of my friends had rented it and called me over, i gave the movie a second chance, it is the worst comedy i have seen in my life, there is nothing funny about this movie, it just bores everyone to death, if i had seen this in the theatre, i would have just walked out, this movie is not worth the disc it is recorded on, if i had actually bought this title, i would be too humiliated to take it back and ask for a refund, it is such a crap movie and does not even deserve to have any copies of it made, after all it's only wasting good discs.
Another thing, it has a stupid intro and is too similar to scary movie's (wich is a good film) and this film makes me feel that i'd be better wathing static for the rest of my life.
